    It’s a Cryin’ Shame I Tell Ya! 🤬

While at my local Walmart today I decided to pick up some beer for the weekend. I was shocked to see how much a case of my Coors Light has gone up! For the longest time it’s always been $19.98 or $20.98 at Walmart or HEB. Well today I had to pay $23.98, a full $3.00 to $4.00 more than normal! This is a travesty, a travesty I say! 🥸 I also noticed the other big name brands, cases of Budweiser and Miller Lite were also $23.98 Guess I’ll have to stop drinking….. Anyway, I also picked up 3 of those small sample size bottles of BBQ sauce from Blues Hog. I was only charged 75 cents for one of them and 10 cents apiece for the other 2! I’ve never tried the Blues Hog stuff so I got 3 different flavors…Tennessee Red, Champion’s Blend and Smoky Mountain.

If you're going to spend real money on it, you might as well start drinking real beer.

You noticed eh? 😂 Yeah, I’ll have tuna with a boiled egg and mayo mixed in 2-3 times a week for lunch.

Panhead John That actually sounds quite good. Maybe just a hint of celery, too.

AI told them that you bought a Lincoln. Surge pricing.

I tried the Championship red on a pork tenderloin and the family requested it on some ribs. So I got a big bottle, it is legit

Blues Hog is my favorite brand of sauce. The Tennessee Red is excellent! And the Champions is a blend, which helps take some of the sweetness away as well as the heavy thick style of sauce. I hope you enjoy them!

and….as tweeter mentions, start drinking bourbon!

Same here! The Champions blend is my favorite. The Tennessee Red is good, but it's too easy to make something similar at home.

Fast food here is going up rapidly. I ran to the local Dairy Queen Saturday and grabbed two double meat burgers and two large orders of fries. The total was $25.13 without drinks. It is now much more cost effective to cook at home. My heart goes out to those on a fixed income.

This is one of the reasons I still brew my own beer, despite a greater selection of local and national craft beers here, versus when I started brewing. I can make beer that I like, from ingredients I control, to my own recipe, for $18 to $30 per 5 gallon keg - the equivalent of 52 12 oz bottles of beer, or 40 16 oz pint pours. The cost variation is based on ingredients, involving factors like beer gravity, amount of hops, etc.

If I already have the yeast on hand, i.e. harvested from prior brews, the cost comes down to about $14-$15 for 5 gallons of a Coors/Bud/Miller style lager. That is at the scales *I* buy grain and hops at. Imagine how much less it costs Coors/Bud/Miller to make theirs, versus what you are paying for it in the store.

Must be nice to have some manual labor to help! Never had that myself, being a childless dog dude. Plus my ability to hoist heavy stuff has greatly diminished with age (like almost everything else!)...

DaveD the best investment I made in my brewing rig was a used March pump I picked up for $50 from someone in my brewing club. I got a full set of quick connect fittings and high temp silicone hose, and setup everything so that I do gravity from HLT -> mash tun, use the pump to recirculate (vorlauf) the mash tun then pump to the boil kettle. Same pump to do a whirlpool when chilling, and then to pump from kettle to the fermenter(s). I split 10 gallon batches into 2 fermenters.

I started home brewing after going to Germany in the early 1990s. I don't have the space or the time for an all grain system, plus I'm a bit lazy. So, I brew mostly extract with specialty grains. I use 5 gallon kegs, got tired of sanitizing 50 twelve ounce bottles for each batch.

My weekday beer is up from 14-17 a case to 24 unless it's on sale at 19.

That Blues Hog Tennessee Red is pretty good. I have a bottle for when I don't have Lexington Dip on hand ( that means too lazy to make another batch).

I might use some of that Tennessee Red on some wings this weekend. Can’t wait to try it.

Panhead John the Tennessee Red is not spicy like a wing sauce. It's really a NC style vinegar based BBQ sauce. The Champions Blend is pretty much a 50/50 mix of that and the Blues Hog Original. I used to buy those 3 versions of Blues Hog by the gallon jugs each summer when I was cooking for a lot more people.

All the blues hog sauces are very good. My go to sauces. I keep some around.

As for beer, I found this Estrella Jalisco recently that I really like, but it is expensive. It is a better Corona IMO. But I got to spend on something, so I go with good beer, good bourbon and good meat. All I really need

Blues Hog Raspberry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce is killer. I doctor it up a tad with additional chipotle peppers and adobo sauce to tame the sweetness.
