Learn the history and get brewing tips and clone recipes from San Francisco's historic Anchor Brewing Co.
The article has all grain and extract versions of clone recipes for Anchor Steam, Anchor California Lager, Anchor Liberty Ale, Anchor Porter, Anchor Old Foghorn and Anchor Small Beer.
I've got a couple of other steam beer (California Common) recipes I will share in separate posts, along with my spin on a porter.

Back when I first started brewing (Anchorage, AK in the 80's) I remember a few feeble attempts to emulate a steam beer. Basically, I took my favorite Brown Ale recipe and just used whatever lager yeast I could find at the local brewing supplies "store" (a guy in the beer club selling out of his house). It was pretty good but not quite close enough to Anchor Steam to pursue further at the time.
MBMorgan unless you live near a home brew supply store, this is a bad time of year to try and order the liquid yeast required. I got a pack of WLP810 back in early May, and plan to do a 2 stage starter to get enough yeast to do two kegs worth in a week or two.
Not sure it would taste the same, but I've done warm ferments up into the 60's using S-23 dry lager yeast in the past, and had good fast results.

This one is closer to the recipe I got from a now departed friend who claimed to know Fritz Maytag and the gang at Anchor back in the day, in that it uses pilsner instead of 2-row for the base malt.
