Having a beer and a snack at The Rabbit Hole in Harper's Ferry. Picture is looking down the Potomac from the railroad bridge. To the right the Shenandoah River merges with the Potomac.

Certainly recognize that view. Decades ago one of my young sons and I hiked the entire C&O canal. Like many other hikers when we got opposite Harper’s Ferry we decided to ignore all the signs warning hikers not to use the bridge. Got about 200 feet across and of course, here comes a train headed right for us. Boy did we backtrack and boogie.

Just thought I would mention that you can see three states in your picture, Maryland to the left, Virginia is center and WV is where you are standing! Hope you had a great trip. Are your Monday lunch plans still on?

I'm on the way home now. On the recommendation of several Pit members, lunch today was at Pioneer Pit Beef just outside of Baltimore.

Pioneer is a small place nestled next to a highway behind a liquor store. I took this pic from the parking lot. I doubt the entire building is bigger than 25' X 25' or so. The sign is faded but what matters is what is within. You enter a door into a short hallway to catch a nice whiff of woodsmoke and order at a window on the left. Order, pay, leave from another door at the end of the hall and sit down at a picnic table to eat.

There are several options for toppings. I decided to go with the traditional horseradish sauce but I decided to forego the onions.

This is from the outdoor, which is the only, eating area.

Now for the important stuff, the food. We both got the regular sandwich, medium rare, with horseradish sauce and we shared a side of fries with gravy - add some cheese curds and it would have been a pretty good poutine.

I thought the sandwich was excellent. The meat was tender, just the right bun size, and the horseradish definitely made the sandwich. My BIL liked it but not as much as me: he thought the bun was dry and a little too big, otherwise he liked it. If I come through Baltimore again I will definitely be back for more!

Just read an article in a Baltimore newspaper about the Pioneer. With the gov shutdown their business has dropped 30-40% because of lack of government employees eating their lunch locally. Still one of my favorite places to eat when up there. I remember when they were just a roadside popup on the Beltway service road a half mile or so down from where they are now. Just by the FBI field office and the MSP barracks. Wishing them well.
