    J-melt in Central Texas!

We are in are in Central Texas to see family and are hitting a bunch of Texas exclusive restaurants, so I figured I would create a thread with my reviews!

First was the greatest of Tex Mex fast food: Taco Cabana! Welp, maybe not the best, but decent. I thought I had taken at least one picture, but I guess not. I had steak street tacos and they were pretty good.

Next was a Texas staple that I wasn’t much of a fan of their lunch/dinner menu while I lived here, but since they had a legit salad for my wife, we decided to try it: Whataburger!

I always enjoyed their breakfast and late night shakes as I stoke my memory more!

Jenny had the chicken salad with fried chicken. It was really good!

I had the Jr. Whataburger meal. The meat itself did not taste like much, but the toppings did a pretty good job of making it a good overall burger.

We are hitting a couple of bbq places in Belton and I will post as I can!

Whataburger is a way of life down here! I took this photo at Academy just a few hours ago.

Yup! I definitely went there a lot for breakfast and late night shakes, just not usually for lunch. I probably should have been more specific!

A Whataburger Jr.?! Man, you should have got a double meat with cheese and bacon.

I have a tiny stomach and we had just been to the Blue Bell creamery in Brehnam and I was driving, so food coma was out of the question!

You’ll be near Uncle Bob ‘s place. You oughtta stop by and surprise him. 🤓 Be careful though, he usually answers the door in his underwear.

Dinner tonight was Schoepf’s Tex Mex BBQ. It was quite enjoyable!

They had a Texas monthly top 50 magazine posted from 1997! The food definitely stood up to being a legacy bbq joint, but not quite up to the amazingness of the newcomers.

We got brisket point, Mac and cheese, Cole slaw, Oaxaca sausage and pulled pork sample from my sister. The brisket was okay, a little dry for point, not bad. The pulled pork was incredible! It was very flavorful and moist. The sausage was okay, but both to write home aboutThe Mac and cheese was really good and the Coke slaw was decent.

Now we come to my favorite part! The brisket queso nachos. The cheese was really good and they did a good job with balancing all the flavors. I would definitely get that again and skip the individual meats.

That is brisket point? They sure didn't trim much fat off, did they?

Nope, they left a TON of fat on it. It tasted pretty good, but most of it stayed on our plates.

58limited I just woke up looking at the picture and I'm thinking "am I right seeing a ginormous chunk of fat on that thing"

For chain Tex-Mex - if there’s a Chuy’s around, I thought that was really good when I visited Austin years back. We drove in 11 hours from home and that was near the house we rented for the weekend and we could get in quick. I enjoyed the food and would go back! Not sure if that’s around where you are, but another spot to visit. We have Taco Cabana here in the Land of Enchantment…those are always a late night run for us after a concert or night out with friends

Tex-Mex here in the Columbus area is pretty hit-and-miss. The Chuy's we had on the east side was great for a few years when they opened up, but has since gone downhill. We've skipped it the last few years. My niece was a hostess at that particular one when they were dwindling down, and had warned us a few times to go somewhere else. Just goes to show you, consistency is the key...

Panhead John - Mariner, or Harrison’s Landing - I think it’s the same spot, was closed tonight. The menu there look great though! Wish it would have been open. So went to Water Street Oyster House. It was good, but I had their Poke and a sushi roll.

Thanks for the recommendations. I have a dinner tomorrow night, but I don’t know where it’s at will be going for work. Should be good though.

For breakfast yesterday morning was Miller’s BBQ!

I did not do a great job of getting great pictures, but here is what I got:

The brisket breakfast taco was pretty good! It had a great brisket taste and the eggs and tortilla paired well.

The bacon seasoned pork ribs were pretty good with a good bite. The biscuits and gravy were decent, but nothing special. The sausage was okay and the bacon was really good!
