We finally were able to get together for my sister's birthday lunch yesterday at Laurenzo's. As I mentioned, historically, the food has been good, but just really hadn't jived with me for whatever reason.
Oh wow, that changed. I think I finally found "my item" on the menu!
First we ordered some crabcakes, which were spectacular. I wish I had gotten a photo. Nearly 5" across and an inch thick, big pieces of blue crab with a delicious cajun seasoning and bread crumbs that were perfectly toasted. Amazing.
For me, I ordered their Rubenzo, which is their take on a reuben. To my utter shock and astonishment, it was the best reuben sandwich I have ever had. I didn't get a photo of it at the restaurant, but here is from this morning where I had the second half for breakfast.

The bread was surprising. Obviously, not rye. It's focaccia, I believe, and is crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, with a delicious spread of garlic butter. (I wish I could make pizza dough like this!) There's just a smear of a thousand-island-like spread and then two types of sauerkraut -- but not much....I don't like reubens that are overloaded with sauerkraut as if I wanted to eat vinegar I would just drink it lol.
There's a thin slice of cheese, possibly provolone. The pastrami was thinly shaved and intensely flavorful. Everything was in balance. It is weird to say that I'm glad it wasn't a bigger sandwich, but with most reubens one element just completely overwhelms everything else. This was perfect. It was still an expensive sandwich -- $22 -- but I'm getting this the next time we go back for sure!
My side was a very generous helping of very good creamed spinach.
