So...my sorry ass is going to be stuck in Denton, TX for a week attending a conference. Once I break free, I have a rental car, and certain amount of time to experience local cuisine. Anybody have any ideas? Doesn't have to be strictly BBQ...mex, tex-mex...anything is fair game. Thanks in advance!

I have been to 407 BBQ several times and it is very good. It does get busy because it's good.
Depending on where you are in Denton, maybe a 15 to 20 minute drive in Argyle.

Denton is a great college town. I enjoyed it so much I graduated from UNT, twice.
Babes Chicken Dinner House in Sanger (just north of Denton) is awesome. Mi Cocina or Gloria's in Highland Village or La Hacienda Ranch in Lewisville for Tex-Mex are really good. Nick's Pizza/Pasta is a whole in the wall, but great Italian in Lewisville. If you want a hole in the wall bbq, Chasin Tail BBQ in Lake Dallas was always good.
For great BBQ pick one, https://www.wfaa.com/article/life/fo...e-8329458e0b0f
Unfortunately, The Texas Blues Crew doesn't seem to have a gig this weekend. Great local band that plays at places on the square in downtown Denton, but a lot of small clubs with live music play on the Square..

The fajitas at La Hacienda Ranch are some of the best I’ve eaten. I judge a Tex-Mex place by their fajitas.

tstalafuse My daughter was a student at UNT. When we planned her wedding there she told me some guys she had met at work wanted to play at her reception. When I ask her what it would cost she said nothing so I was in! I don’t know much about them but heard them on the radio later. They were called Bowling For Soup.

Oak Smoke, La Hacienda is actually their steak house, so it doesn't surprise me the fajitas are really good, but their Tex-Mex is really good as well. I used to take visiting family there and would order the appetizer plater to start (huge plater), then the Whole Enchilada, which as you can imagine was also large. Made for good left overs the next day. Mariano's is their actual Tex-Mex restaurant, just not one close to Denton.

There is a Chuy’s Tex-Mex on south I35E in Denton. Big, colorful chain. It’s better than average for this type of place. Go hungry—huge portions, burritos especially.

The times I’ve eaten at a Chuy’s here in Houston, it’s been pretty darn good.

Chuy's is Austin Tex-Mex, but good nonetheless. Best available in Colorado Springs by a long a long shot. The one thing I like is that after the pandemic, you could order the regular menu if you knew it as it was still in the computer just not on the printed menu. Nothing better than the Elvis Presley Commemorative Dinner with Boom Boom sauce. As far as I can tell, the only thing that has changed is you can't refill your chips/salsa from the trunk of the 57' Chevy, which is a bummer..

I’ve also been impressed with Chuy’s. It’s a place i would go back to any time. Really enjoyed the food.
My buddy grew up in Dallas, and one of his favorite Tex-Mex spots was La Calle Doce - I don’t know where it’s at in relation to where you will be staying, but one of the times I went to Dallas with him to watch the Cowboys play, he took me there. It was pretty good.
