For those who have paid any attention to my barbecue restaurant rants over the years, I've tried to give brief tours of the many barbecue restaurants in the Houston area. Truth, ranked #3 in the State, is still my hands down favorite. But others I've written about; Corkscrew, Tejas Chocolate, Killen's, Gatlin's (oh Ronnie and his ribs!), Pinkerton's, Blood Brothers, Bretts, Dozier's and Goode Company to name a few, hopefully have given folks a glimpse into the myriad of offerings in our City.
Since the "snobs" up in Dallas-Ft. Worth have posted their awesome mini crawl up there (you know I love you guys !!!), my doing the same yesterday coincides nicely. That said, the places I went were more on the personal side. Both are ranked in the Top 50 (or actually I think one has slipped to the Top 100) but not necessarily considered among the primer places here. I realize this may only be of interest to a handful of folks but I want to give those interested in touring Htown bbq joints an honest assessment of what we have to offer. In a way I'd also like to make a pitch for a Meat-up here as well. So much to see and do in Houston.
First a little background. Prior to the Pandemic (since then I've worked from home and loving it!!) I used to work in one of the high-rise business centers here in Houston called Greenway Plaza. It's a series of high-rises like you'd see in any urban setting but what makes it somewhat unique is most of the parking is done in an enormous underground garage. Within that underground area is a large food and shopping court, sort of a mini-mall. Within that food court is one of Houston's better barbecue venues called Feges.
Obviously it's convenient to eat lunch there but it's kind of a long trek so I'd only go over there on occasion. Food was first rate and still is from what I hear. That said, last year they decided to open another venue in another part of town called Spring Branch. Among the areas Hispanic stores and markets, they built their new restaurant in a new sort of posh strip center. The reason I like this place is the size of and variety on their menu.

They also run specials from things like fried chicken to salmon steaks, so its more of a full blown restaurant then exclusively a Texas trinity barbecue joint. Here is a hangar steak offering they had in the food court that included roasted culi in a Romesco sauce. Not exactly typical bbq fare.

At any rate I found the place to be spacious and typical barbecue restaurant like as well. Rustic with a large outdoor patio, it could easily serve about 100 folks. This was actually my second restaurant of the day so I ordered a small amount since I have already had plenty of their usual items in the past. So I just had a sliced brisket sandwich and an awesome side salad. The brisket did not disappoint, it was smoky with a lot of peppery bark. Kind of just melted in my mouth.

So again Feges new venue did not disappoint. Not exactly the neighborhood I would have chosen but the atmosphere and the variety of different types of food will continue to draw me in regardless of location. Still a legit and well presented venue.
