    Benefit For John Brotherton

I was talking with Travis Scott of 1701 BBQ yesterday and he told me that John Brotherton of Brotherton's Black Iron BBQ in Pflugerville, Tx (near Austin) had a medical emergency recently. I'm not sure of the nature of the emergency but he is in a medically induced coma. John has been a big promoter of Texas BBQ over the years. Travis told me that an informal get together is happening at the restaurant this Saturday to help them out by buying BBQ and supporting the business. I haven't seen a formal announcement, Travis just told me that people are going to show up. I thought that members in Central Texas might wish to go so I made this post.

A GoFundMe page has been set up here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/john-and-...need-your-help

John's son Braeden posted a brief message on Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PFTXBBQ/

Prayers out to him and his family. I’ve heard of his joint but never been. Bit far from the Meatup but may consider it as a side trip, Interstellar is in the same area.

Sadly, John passed away the other day.

Sad, but thank you for the update.

Attached is Daniel Vaughn’s tribute article in Texas Monthly to John’s passing is indeed inspirational. I realize most of you have never heard of him outside of Texas, many perhaps even in the state as well. That said, please take the time to read a few of what the Texas Pitmaster community has to say about him. It speaks volumes not so much about his cooking but about family, friendships and what truly binds us as lovers of this crazy hobby/business we call Texas style barbecue.

I have to admit, I was thinking wow, those are some really nice tributes after reading 3 or 4. Daniel did a nice job getting those thoughts so quickly. Then I realized, there were many many more. What a loss.

Wow! What a great outpouring of tributes. Wish I had the chance to meet John.

I’ve been one time and it was solid, unfortunately I missed the Brisket Boudin. It’s not that far off of the toll road, so it wouldn’t take as long as you think. Going north on I 35 I would expect it to be 2 hrs minimum.

I’m going for sure, then heading over to Interstellar

Such sad news, even though I had not heard of him either - but age 49? That's just wrong. Why does it seem to always be the best people who are taken from us too soon? Yeah, I know, "only the good die young" and all that, but for crissakes. Why can't the total a$$holes drop dead for a change?!?!
