    Brett's Rueben

Sometimes I just give serious thought to thanking my lucky stars that I live in Texas. My local BBQ joint, who also have become friends, is in the Top 50 BBQ places in the Lone Star State, perhaps the best places in the universe for all things BBQ. I'm talkin' about Brett's in Katy.

But I digress. I did Jackie, Brett's business partner and admin of the operation a favor this week. As a result I was gifted some wonderful BBQ and while I was waiting for that, I was also given one of their Rueben Sandwiches. Of course she just HAD to super size it, I swear this thing had a pound of pastrami on it and half a gallon of kraut. I ate about a third of it and took the rest home for two others to finish. It was ridiculous. And the icing on the cake? See that little piece of pastrami burnt end on top? That may in fact be the best bite of cow I have ever had in my life.

Yea its good to be in Texas. Ya;'ll come on down, ya hear???

I know, not very lady-like, but I'm drooling a little...

Do tell us more about the pastrami burnt end. Was it sweet? Savory? Both? Could you tell what the flavoring on it was? Inquiring minds and drooling mouths want to know.

How is it that I can describe heaven in a bite? I heard the arch angels singing angelically as the moist, ever so tender protein simply melted in my mouth. Think the most amazing bite of a tenderloin, the slightly acidic flavor of pastrami and the perfect cap of peppery bark all in your mouth at one time. It was...well....divine !!

I must have missed your invite to join you…….😢

How were the tots? Best I ever had was at East Of Texas at the North Carolina MeatUp.

        That is solid!

And just south of Katy Mills. I gotta remember this the next time I'm up in that area. Love me a reuben!

Troutman That must have been a HUGE favor to receive a sandwich that size, and a pastrami burnt end plus MORE barbecue for dessert.

That photo also makes me want to try my hand at pastrami. I've always wanted to.....I need to just do it!

You are missing out. Meathead’s pastrami recipe is the best on the free side by a long shot.

It has taken me a little while to perfect my technique but Meatheads pastrami recipe is the most ask for thing I cook. I fixed 6 corned beef to pastrami points for Reubens in late September along with several loaves of fresh baked rye bread for an Oktoberfest we have every year. There were several other meats and sides available but the pastrami and rye were gone long before the evening was over. This year I’m curing my own points. I’m told by several here that will take it to the next level.

Sorry, I ran out of room. Try making pastrami, you’ll love it!

Are we allowed to know this massive favor? Because some of us may need to steal the idea for our local joints if we can.

I took the fam to Brett's when we were down there to visit our daughter back in June. I was really hyped up to try it, and still it far exceeded my expectations. I told Brett the same thing when he personally walked over to our table to ask how everything was. All that lip smacking and oohs and ahs must have been causing a disturbance.

Cannot wait to get back down there again! Brett's has earned a spot along with the original Ninfa's on my Houston area must-eat list.

I'd like that Panhead John, and it could happen. Daughter is about to move from Katy to Spring. I don't know if that's closer or farther away from you guys, but it feels closer to Houston even though it's really not.

It’s a little further, maybe 20 minutes or so farther, not a big deal. There’s a few excellent BBQ joints on the North side, Tejas Chocolate and BBQ in Tomball and Corkscrew…..both are excellent and placed high on Texas Monthly’s list.

I wish those not familiar with Houston could understand how much high praise this is.

Full disclosure: I have spent exactly two weeks of my life in Houston/Katy (two trips). But I have gotten good advice on here and I know what I like. 🙂

The favor shall remain a hidden secret but I did order and pay for the sandwich. She did the super sizing as a favor, it’s normally about a third smaller. Still a heck of a deal for $13 bucks!!
