This definitely is a Houston thing, but if you know, you know. Today, November 12, marks the 50th anniversary of The Original Ninfa's on Navigation Blvd.

In its heyday, it truly was the best Mexican food in Texas since Texas was part of Mexico.
My favorites were the queso flameado.....grilled chicken coated and smothered in melty, gooey cheese, with a bit of tequila doused on top that was then set on fire. And, the chicken fajitas chihuahua: perfectly seasoned a grilled chicken with cheese and bacon. Yum!
And a frozen margarita (or two) to wash it down.
Ninfa's is still considered to be excellent; however, time changes things. The original location is the only one of the many Ninfa's restaurants that is still owned by the original family. The others, including the two I used to frequent, drastically changed their menu when they were sold in the late 2000s or closed entirely. They were never the same.
(I actually have a small connect to the restaurant. My sister's husband actually works for the Laurenzo family.)
