I am planning a trip down thru Central Texas and was checking on Brett's business hours. They closed down permanently on February 22nd but Brett says he will be cooking at festivals and a few other events.
He helped put Rockdale on the map so it's sad to see him go under. I know the Texas Meet-Up group will be saddened to hear this.
Yeah, 58limited actually told me that a few weeks ago…😢 It’s a shame too, they had such great BBQ, and sides too. I was wondering what happened and why he decided to close up. Rockdale is kind of out in the middle of nowhere, population about 5,300…….maybe there just wasn’t the population base to sustain the business.
One of the guys from 1701 BBQ told me about Brett's closing down. I'm pretty sad about that.
Snow's is right down the road in Lexington, an even smaller town. Fame will bring the business, at least in the warm (vacation) months, and every time I was in Rockdale he was busy. Snow's has the weekly livestock auction 2 blocks away to bring them business in the off season though, might make a difference.
Maybe the sidewalk construction that’s been going on for years finally got in front of them.
On a more serious note I don’t remeber the prices being out of line or cheap, we were going to places where price wasn’t an issue at the Meat up’s and premium priced BBQ is probably hard to sell consistently in Rockdale. The town grew to what it used to be because Alcoa had a huge mine and Aluminum Smelter that closed down in 2008 and it’s been shrinking since then.
