A Birthday Dinner - 2M Smokehouse, San Antonio

I just had by 74th birthday. My niece and her husband (and their 6 week old baby daughter) took me to the 2M Smokehouse in San Antonio as a gift.

Their big item was the 2M sandwich (1/4lb brisket, 1/4lb pork, and sausage.

We skipped the 2m sandwich on advice of the counter guy and instead sampled the sliced brisket, chopped brisket sandwich, pulled pork, picadillo and two kinds of sausage.

Sides were smoked mac and cheese, sweet slaw, mexican street corn and cowboy beans.

Overall, I would rate the brisket, sausage, and picadillo as some of the best I have ever had. The street corn and beans were also outstanding. Surprisingly, I would just rate the pulled pork as average. Definitely a place to return to and one of the best in San Antonio

That's awesome! Congrats on the birthday, and time with family!

I see your niece rocking a backpack diaper bag. I've gotten used to seeing my youngest daughter with one of those all the time, ever since the 18 month old baby was born. I don't think she carries a purse, as everything for her and the baby goes into that backpack.

Panhead John You could never eat there, however, as it is not on your beloved Texas Monthly Top 50 list.

The top 50 list is published every 4 years. Last in 2021. Two San Antonio places made the list. Pinkertons and 2M Smokehouse.

Great pics and food evaluation. Alright I am going to press you. Where would you rank it in Texas Monthly’s top 50? Ever since the last Texas Meat Up I’ve been sampling BBQ joints and trying to rank them in the Texas Monthly top 50. You are getting close to catching me in the birthday thing, but I will add another year in September. LOL

They deserve to be top 50. Brisket is the standout. I think there are so many good BBQ places in Texas that it really becomes subjective when rating them. Each place usually has 1 or 2 outstanding items. Often a particular side or dessert puts one above another. I just love them all and feel lucky to be here to enjoy them.

Reminds me of when my wife's sister visited from Indiana. We said we would take her to get good mexican food. She said they had a mexican restaurant in her town. Taco Bell.

I think there are so many good BBQ places in Texas due to the pitmasters sharing with each other and often moving around. One of the two 2M owners spent some time working at La Barbecue. Pitmasters in TX seem to be like the members of the Pitmaster Club. They take pride in their art and are willing to share their knowledge with others.

Visiting top notch places makes you realize how good BBQ can be and where you can improve. My Chubby G2 make what I think is pretty good brisket. But the bark on the 2M brisket blows mine away. Another reminder of what you can get with a stick burner if you are willing to put in the time to get difference.

I have been lucky enough to get San Antonio a handful of times, the food on the Riverwalk and thru out the city is amazing.

Sounds like you had a nice birthday dinner. Good food, good company, and extra points for introducing the little one to barbecue at an impressionable age.
