Colleges tour ( secretly bbq tour heh heh)

Bird 4 is getting ready to leave the nest. She’s a Junior and looking at 4 schools in SC and 1 in NC.
    UNC Wilmington
    Coastal Carolina
    College of Charleston
    University of SC

I promise to read the threads, but following the southerly route of the schools listed, then back north and west to USC what are the quintessential bbq joints you’d recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

The only one I can recommend if it’s not out of your way is East of Texas in Winston-Salem. WayneT DavidNorcross ItsAllGoneToTheDogs Jim White and myself ate there during the NC MeatUp. Absolutely some of the best brisket I’ve ever had! Everything we had was really good, from the pulled pork to their tater tots….👍👍

If they can't make good tater tots just keep driving.

Meh, skip the piedmont brisket run to East of Texas and eat some whole hog, down east NC bbq at Sam Jones in Greenville, NC. It’s on your way to UNC by the sea. If you’re into fancy French cuisine, check out Caprice Bistro in Wilmington.

IMO no of note BBQ in or near Wilmington, there's good stuff but nothing blow your socks off. And it's quite a far drive from there to Winston for East of Texas, it's an hour and half to drive toward me and go to Grady's (which is A- on a bad day) or almost 2 hours to Skylight which is supposedly amazing but I still haven't made it to. However, Wilmington is pretty amazing and has a lot of food to take in. I know some of the locals will say Moes, but it's B- at best to me anyway. But if you've never had Eastern NC BBQ you could do worse.

Make sure you check out downtown Wilmington, there's multiple days worth of sightseeing and culinary exploration a short distance from the college.

I'd love to go to the Skylight Inn, but it's a 4 hour drive each way for me, and I can't think of anything to eat worth 8 hours of driving.

RonB Oh c’mon Ron, it’s a 3 hour drive for me so let’s meet there sometime. 😎

RonB well I think there should be a get together in Wilmington someday, obviously no BBQ of note but its a walking town and lots of food and drink... if we ever do that then maybe you hit Skylight on the way home

What about South Carolina? Any thoughts there? We’ll mostly be in SC.

You may find this map on my site helpful. Happy to provide suggestions but I always like to preface those by asking what sort of experience you are looking for: authentic old school SCBBQ, Texas style, modern chef-driven BBQ or any/all of the above as long as it is typically of high quality, etc.

Here’s a piece I wrote on BBQ in Charleston.

My son would say Coastal Carolina - only because he knows they have had a decent baseball team recently…college World Series decent!

hope you have a great time on the tour!

Our son went to Coastal Carolina on a golf management scholarship. After a year and a half, realized he didn’t want to pursue the golf thing and came home. Finished at U of WI Milwaukee with two degrees and is now retired at 39 after building and selling a company. What’s he doing with his time? Golfing. 🙄

I have one who graduated from UNCW and loved it.

However wherever she decides to go I have a pro tip for you. Go a few days early, take her to the housing office and apply for a job working the front desk in her dorm. Puts her on the path for dorm RA her second year which comes with a stipend and free room and board. Dad & Mom will save thousands and thousands of dollars over the next three years. Our score, 3 out of 3.
