    Sonny's BBQ

Went to the Venice location with friends, (not my decision), last week, and I was not impressed. The cole slaw and the green beans were good, but I don't go to a bbq joint for slaw and beans. The cornbread was a corn muffin and very sweet. I would expect sweet cornbread if I was up North, but not in the deep south. And it was cold. The combo plate I ordered came with brisket, dry ribs, pulled pork and pulled chicken. All of it was ok, but not great. However, I thought that the "dry" in dry ribs just meant there was no sauce, but they were dry throughout as well as no sauce..
I will not return if it's my choice.

Thats too bad, I just had a not great meal at a BBQ in Derby, Ct this week. House of Bones. It was pretty bland, and it was very greasy. Portions were huge. Coleslaw and Collet greens were very good.

When my wife & I were on our honeymoon we ate at a few Sonny's between MI and Key West (we drove) and this was back before I knew anything about BBQ, early 2002. I remember liking Sonny's. But I also used to like Burger King's coffee back then too...so there's that. From what I understand nowadays, calling Sonny's "BBQ" is like calling Taco Bell "Mexican"?

When I was in college I used to eat at the original Sonny’s every Sunday in Gainesville Florida. $5 for dinner included sweat tea. I still occasionslly eat there for lunch and get the baby back ribs special with beans, fries, garlic toast and tea. I still like that meal for about $12 but must admit, haven’t been there as much since I learned to make ribs here.....turnin’ into smokesnob ...

I've eaten at that one, in fact most of my Sonny's experience was that one. Some good friends of ours live there and we stayed at their place on our trip way back.

I know what you mean... I don't do BBQ out anymore. I went last year to the home of Head Country BBQ and was very disappointed. I was pretty sure I was going to be, and I was right. I actually met the owner once who gave me a business card and wrote "free meals" on it, but I've never used it. I just like my own BBQ.
