First time in NOLA, any suggestions?

    Hi Everyone -

I'm traveling to New Orleans for the first time, and it's for work to attend the AACR conference. I'll be at the convention center most of the time. Does anyone recommend a can't miss non touristy restaurant that I should put on my bucket list?

    Thanks
    Steve

This will be a fire storm of info I'm sure. For me one of the must go to in NOLA is Jacques-Imo's

Expect long lines. It is an experience.

I grew up in New Orleans. Two of my favorites - Creole-Italian cooking www.liuzzas.com and for a roast beef poorboy Parkway Bakery.

The onion rings (unique) and the hot sausage poorboy at Liuzzas are among my favorites.

I've been to NOLA a few times and always hit a few places. For dang good food, I go to Cochon's, http://www.cochonrestaurant.com/ . Or Cochon Butcher for lunch. Very authentic Creole food and consistent goodness. Try the pork cheeks.

It's sort of iconic and a neat place but Cafe Du Monde for the Beignets. http://www.cafedumonde.com/beignets

Lastly, Pat O' Briens for a good hurricane on Burbon. They happen to have really good food too. http://www.patobriens.com/patobriens/default.asp

If you happen to be driving in from the west, there are even more places to check out for Boudin, Cracklins, and other specialty meats . Exit 97 from I-10 is where to stop.

Nice. Thanks for the input. I hit two of this last night. Pats and Cafe are very cool and less insane than the rest of Bourbon St

Mother's Restaurant on Poydras for lunch, walking distance from the Convention Center, but can have long lines for lunch.

        I like Mother's for breakfast-ham & eggs.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I had lunch at Mother's yesterday. Great scene. I enjoyed a combination platter, and the best part was the sausage they used in the Jambalaya. Had dinner on Bourbon St at the coronet. I'm looking forward to trying more places.

          Mother's is great!

Also, stop by Central Grocery on Decatur, not far from Cafe DuMonde. It's super fun Italian little market, and the muffuletta is SuperRockin. I always get a whole extra or two and bring them home, if I can refrigerate.

Cafe Mesaperos (sp) double fisted pastrami sandwich. To die for. (Or the French dip)
