Recently I had the opportunity to visit 12 Bones in Arden, NC, after a site visit in Charlotte. The space itself is very nice, with a brewery at one end of the building and the restaurant at the other end. The food was pretty good. I had the baby back ribs, collard greens and damn good corn pudding (that is the name of the dish - with a name like that I couldn't resist). I also had a side of smoked turkey. I had the ribs naked. They were above average, but I didn't think they were outstanding. There were 4 sauces available on a counter. I tried them, but none of them stood out to me, and unfortunately I didn't write them down. The collards were pretty good. But the stars were the turkey and corn pudding. The turkey was darn near perfect - so good that I actually thought about driving the 3 hours to get one for Thanksgiving. Very moist, slightly smokey. The corn pudding, well, it was damn good. So good that I bought the dry ingredients to make some at home. I also got a 6 pack of beer - Cheeky Gander English pub ale. It was outstanding. And the guy that checked us out talked me into getting their cookbook - he gave me an autographed one for the price of one without the autograph. And I got a ball cap. Not the cheapest lunch...
I saw WI Bubba review of this place after I visited, and while his review of the ribs differ from mine slightly, I agree with him that it is worth stopping by. I will certainly make a return trip when I am in the area.
