Mari Jo and I have been married 15 years and, for the first time during our time together, we went out for dinner on our anniversary. We’ve grown so accustomed to disappointment at most restaurants so we’ve always made our own dinner in in the past.
We chose a relatively new place in town called the Downtown Grille, in Winston-Salem. It’s on the ground floor of an sleek steel and glass office building.

Mari Jo had the house made corn rigatoni with cream corn, charred corn, sherry, brown butter and lump crab meat.

I had the bone-in pork schnitzel with lemon zest, reggiano and parsley. I didn’t take a pic of the grilled carrots in harrisa yogurt, preserved lemon and dukkah. Dukkah is an Egyptian blend of coarsely ground spices that include cumin, coriander, salt, nuts, and sometimes a spicy addition like cayenne. The carrots stole the show. Mari Jo even liked them and she’s not a fan of carrots. Dukkah for the win.
If you ever find yourself in Winston-Salem, try Downtown Grille.
