    "Beast" - Fishkill, NY

On a recent trip to New York we stayed in Fishkill and our last night in town the 2-family group I was in wanted to try a restaurant just a couple skips from our hotel, since we'd all had a long day. We'd done pizza the night before (Sal's, it was okay but not wow-ing) so this night was BBQ night.

My wife found "Beast" online. It was awesome.

They have quite the bourbon assortment if that's your thing, even some higher end ones that most places don't have. The separate shelf under the neon pig has an assortment of hard to find Buffalo Trace offerings.

It's not a big place, it's long and skinny like a downtown storefront type place, but there are several tables outside with great lighting.

I got 1/2 lb brisket (fatty), 1/2 rack of their crispy Seoul gochujang pork ribs, and 12 wings since they were on special that night. No I'm not really that big of an eater, I took a good bit home.

Brisket was surprisingly excellent. Great tenderness, perfect saltiness and seasoning w/o being over- or under-done, and really good bark. My only complaint, minor as it is, was it was sliced with the grain, but since I asked for fatty and clearly got fatty point, it mattered nada. And it was literally my only complaint. One piece nearly split under its own weight. Not crumbly at all, dare I say...perfect.

The ribs were great, they were crispy and the gochujang was on point.

The wings were smoke-grilled, and tasted just like my/our homemade smoke-grilled wings. They were extra well done, which is exactly how I prefer my wings, can't stand flabby soft wings. Didn't get wing pics, but you know what they look like. They offer a slew of dry rub and sauces. I opted for Buffalo on half and lime pepper dry rub on the other. Both great.

Perhaps my most favorite, the most unique, was the BBQ sauce. It was red, served on the side as it should be. It didn't taste like you might think, there was a different vibe. It took me forever to figure out what I was tasting in it. Then it hit me, it reminded me of marinara. What? I know, odd for BBQ. But it did, and it worked incredibly well. There was a little vinegar but it took a far back seat. And a little spice too. But much more herbal notes front and center. Not ketchup-y, but also not uber-fresh like Black Swan.

My wife and her friend split the brisket nachos and she said they were fantastic. My buddy got that night's special sandwich, the brisket street corn sandwich. He said it was amazing and it looked like a sloppy handful of heaven as he was silently putting it away with wide eyes.

As I was leaving I asked the waitress to ask the owner (she said he's Peruvian) for even a hint of one or two ingredients in the BBQ sauce, she said he probably won't spill. I told her I'm from MI if that helps, i won't steal his recipe and open up a place across the street. She came back and said "Sorry, he won't sing!", so I am left to figure this one out on my own. Maybe there will be another new Huskee's Shawsh coming out, inspired by a Peruvian-New York BBQ joint.... My wife and I told them abotu AmazingRibs.com, so who knows, maybe we'll see one or two of them around these parts.

If you're ever in the Fishkill, New York area this place will not disappoint. Well worth the drive!

Their website has no food photos, it's rather simple. Should you care to peek at their menu here it is: https://www.feedyourinnerbeast.com/

We mustn't have any members in that neck of the woods. With a write up like that and victuals of the quality you mentioned, this place is sure under the Amazing Wibs radar. Nice work!

Believe me the thought was not lost on me at all. I feared the circumstances might play out as they did, not really allowing me to venture away.

Nice write up Huskee! The food looks amazing and it sounds like it was. It’s kind of rare to go out with a group of people to a restaurant and everyone likes everything they had. Do they have any plans to come to Houston? 😋

I’m only 30 minutes from Peekskill. Hit me up if you want to. Depending on the day I might be able to get out. 👍🏼

What, great BBQ in New York!!! Somebody get a rope...

You stumbled into quite the gem of a place. Not to hijack your post, but all of the hub-bub over the Cracker Barrel fiasco reaffirms my aversion to chain restaurants. It's not that they're necessarily bad, but they are by necessity mediocre. I always try to seek out hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop joints. They rarely disappoint, and quite often Wow us. I had a similar experience at a Mexican joint in a rough part of Amarillo (is there any other part of Amarillo?) a couple of years ago.

I can't imagine ever being near Fishkill, NY, but if I'm ever within 100 miles I'll give it try! Thanks for taking us along.

there was a ton of great non-chain places in the area, but everything I ate was slices or Italian for the most part.

I too am not a fan of chains, unless I know and like them. I do happen to really like CB, because what I like to get there is really good there. I mean that's precisely what makes someone a fan of a place, so nothing too profound there. But BBQ chains, no thanks, always garbage. You need the little local places started up by folks like you & I who know their stuff, not suits and shareholders.

I stayed in the Fishkill area for a while, I wish I would have known this existed. I had lots of great food, but the closest I got to BBQ was the Cracker Barrel by our hotel (it was a BBQ burger and obviously I'm jokingly counting it as que).
