Clown Dog Restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico

As I continue to try and beef up (get it)…the restaurant review section for New Mexico, I thought this would be a great one to add in and show off a few of the excellent items Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor offers!

Clowndog is located in Albuquerque, NM, in the Nob Hill area of town. It wasn’t until recently that I became aware of Clowndog and that was only because I follow a local social media profile that showcases restaurants that are gluten free friendly. And when Clowndog was showcased as having gluten free onion rings….it was like the scene in Jerry Maguire - “You had me at onion rings!”

My wife and I have visited Clowndog a few times now and each visit has not disappointed! It’s a small little spot located in Nob Hill, just east of the University of New Mexico. Fun little area that offers a number of restaurants, shops and bars. Clowndog is just as you would picture, walk in to a host of vintage circus and clown paraphernalia across the walls. This locally owned spot also stays true to the local area by offering mostly local beer and cider as well. Along with being voted “Best of City” the past two years, Clowndog is also the reigning Guinness World Record location for Corndog eating, set on Oct. 1, 2022.

You can choose to sit at the bar and watch whatever games are playing, or sit in the dining area just to the left. If you time it right, you can even get the “window seat” and enjoy your meal while people watching the Central Ave. foot traffic.

Clowndog offers a number of specialty hot dogs or you can build your own. The few times I’ve been, I’ve had the chance to try the Frito Dog as well as the Chicago Dog. Both were great, but I gotta say that Chicago Dog was top notch! My wife has had the Chicago Dog both times and really enjoyed it.

Chicago Dog - as one would expect with all the fixin’s!

Along with the excellent all beef hot dogs and gluten free buns, Clowndog uses a gluten free cornmeal and GF flour batter (similar to a corn dog) for two amazing sides dishes - their onions rings as well as the fried cheese on a stick! It had been years since we have had onion rings and oh my were these excellent! And to quote my wife “the cheese balls didn’t suck!” Light and airy batter, great flavor and melty cheese that paired amazingly with yellow mustard!

and because I just can’t get enough french fries in my life, and since my parent’s were with us yesterday, we decided to try out the french fries as well. These were good and something I would order again - although I think these put me over the top with food for the day!

Clowndog is definitely a great spot to visit and indulge on a few hot dogs and sides with a beer or cider. After, take some time to walk off the food and stroll around Nob Hill, visit the shops and perhaps even visit one of the many local breweries in the area for a pre or post pint. And however you want your hotdog, I’m sure you can find it here or get one of their specialty dogs and be as giddy as a Clown!

    One last Chicago Dog photo!

A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Expand waist size, I don't understand.
Anyway, I have 7-way stretch pants, and I am at 6 with only 1 to go.

Clown pants not included with purchase - and yes, I’m still full from last night!

That does look fantastic and I’d order the same. Chicago dogs are really the peak combination of flavors for a hot dog. Excellent place.

I’d like to try the Sonoran dog sometime. They also had a dog of the day yesterday that had me with the sauer kraut

But gonna be hard to pass on the Chicago dog!

I do like the look of that one too and certainly a good choice if we are not in the mood for a Chicago dog. Very original toppings!

After having a dangerous run in with gluten, I am envious. Would sure like to have a shop like that in this town. Great write up!

They state they are not a GF only kitchen, but I don’t know anywhere that is minus a bakery here in town. But, saying that, the owner’s wife is celiac, so that tells me they understand what they are doing. And looking at the menu, I don’t think anything is fried that isn’t GF, so that also helps.

And it is nice to find these spots. Not sure if you know about this website or not, but maybe it helps you find some spots

Yes, I have the find me app. Found it somewhat innacurate for our metropolis.

Yep. You can get regular sesame buns. I forgot which brand these were, but they are purchased locally at Smiths/Krogers. They toast them up with a little butter I think…

My wife and I went back to Clown Dog today with a friend and I tried the Sonoran Dog that is topped with Chopped Bacon, Pinto Beans, Flame-roasted Jalapeño Salsa, Tomatoes, Onions, Mustard, and Ranch Dressing. This was good! I think after having this, I have an idea for a build your own dog, but always fun to visit and bring a friend along who loved it!!
