The taco joint of ALL taco joints - Don Choche Tacos y Cerveza in Albuquerque, NM

I think I found the TACO spot in Albuquerque and seeing there is only one spot in reviews for my beloved Land of Enchantment, I had to showcase this find!

Don Choche Tacos y Cerveza on 4th Street in Albuquerque, NM - oh my why haven’t I heard of this place before a month or so ago! It’s an authentic Mexican taqueria, coming at you with all of the taco varieties you can think of. Have you watched Netflix’s Taco Chronicles - well, that’s what Don Choche’s is all about!

Originally, Don Choche was a food truck, where they wondered the city of Albuquerque for 11 years. But in 2019, they opened this location in the quaint Albuquerque North Valley. I’ve driven by this place I don’t know how many times and never noticed!

The menu consists of a number of meats, carne asada, barbacoa, carnitas, shrimp, carne adovada, barbacoa, tripa, chicharron, green chile brisket….and my two favorites - Birria y consome and Al Pastor! You can choose all these for burritos, tostados and tortas. You can also get a molcajete full of 1lb of meat, which would be amazing to share with family and friends! There are some great appetizers available like chips with queso and guacamole, as well as shrimp cocktail and aguachiles. They also have what looks to be an amazing breakfast menu as well, serving huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos and chilequiles. And of course, green chile stew or menudo. And of course, the salsa bar that is loaded with roja, jalapeno, taquera, chipotle, peanut, tomatillo and then a few garnishes.

My wife and I wanted to try some tacos of course, so we went with the 4 taco selection, which allows for up to two choices. My wife loves asada, so that was first for her along with carnitas. For me, my all time favorite taco is birria, so two of those as well as two Al Pastor. Both of us were blown away by the flavor of the all the meat. The birria had a wonderful Oaxacan style cheese with the meat which brought a punch of flavor! The asada was perfectly cooked and seasoned unbelievably, and the carnitas were excellent as well. But for me, the Al Pastor was the star of the show. I don’t think these were cut from a trompo based on how the meat was served, but the flavor and tenderness of the meat was out of this world! I could have ordered more and just kept eating they were so good!

We enjoyed the meal sitting out on the covered patio, sipping on a lime margarita and listening to the Mexican music playing. They also offer watermelon and strawberry margaritas as well as a nice selection of Mexican beer and aguas frescas. The atmosphere was fun, even though it was a bit cool outside. This place on a warmer day with some friends would be so much fun!

I only snapped the one photo of my plate of tacos, so I grabbed a few from a google search to show what this little taco love shack truly looks like!

If you ever visit Albuquerque and want the real deal Taco Chronicles experience, then head over to Don Choches! But call me first so I can meet you there

Awesome. We have 4 really good taco joints. Mr Taco Jr., El Lugar, Juniors, and Ruby's Tacos.

I am on board with a killer birria taco. I would have ordered that green chile brisket taco as my other though. That does sound great.

I also assume they have “real” flautas, not tacquitos that are called flautas. I love places like these.

But, you know, my favorite sentence was your last one. It sounds like a fantastic place to hang out!

Flautas! I do believe they had those on the menu. I’ll be back soon, I’m sure and will follow up to this review!

And yes, green chile brisket….I almost got that but went with the others. It wasn’t an easy decision . But GCB will be on the plate my next trip!

I scoured the menu on Yelp. Haha.

Yes this looks like my kind of place - and my order would have been the same as yours, I'm a sucker for al pastor and birria, but that green chile brisket would ALSO be on my next trip!

My son would be the asada fiend, and my wife would definitely have had the carnitas. If we make it back out that way anytime soon, we will definitely have to try this place out!

        Thanks for the great writeup!

You had me at “Have you watched Netflix’s Taco Chronicles - well, that’s what Don Choche’s is all about!”

That is a place I would go to all the time, in fact I’d probably give up making my own.

It looks like a virtual cornucopia of taco flavors and all things Mexicana !! Even though barbecue is king in Texas, the queen is definitely the taco joint 👍🌮🌮🌮

Alright, two trips in five days….my son is in town for spring break and we went out to visit my grandmother and then lunch. And since so many had interest in the green chile brisket tacos (as did I), I gave those a shot today along with the birria once again!

My son, he loves nachos, so he ordered those with chicken. The chicken was excellent! Shredded and very flavorful, so good I’d even get those as tacos in the future. The chips are freshly made, so stayed pretty crunchy with the chicken and green chile queso that was loaded on. He was very happy with his mound of goodness!

And for me, unfortunately, I didn’t think the green chile brisket tacos were the best I’ve had. The brisket was flavorful and the green chile stood out, but overall these could have been better. I think all that would be needed is to griddle up the tortillas rather than serving warmed. And adding some cheese while on the griddle would make these great!

But the birria tacos were excellent once again! The way they griddle the birria tacos and cheese is how they should make the brisket tacos. All good though! I’ll be back again soon And with this visit, that makes six different types of meat that I’ve tried at Don Choche Tacos y Cerveza and all six have had great flavor. Just a matter of how you want to eat the meat, with enchiladas, tortas, nachos or tacos!

There's a nice taco place up in a vacation spot my wife & I go to, appearance-wise looks a lot like this place (but northern MI, not NM, so there's that, lol) and their tacos are kick butt. Takeout only except for a picnic table or two outside, small place. But I got a variety of their tacos and while everything else was amazing one of the beef ones were a let down. I empathize with your comments 100%.

OK, I need a taco joint to hang out at. Not surprisingly Venice is not exactly a bastion of non-Italian ethnic restaurants. Don Choche sounds great. If I ever get to Albuquerque, I'll be contacting you about joining me there.

I’m with you Draznnl. Not a lot of authentic ethnic replaces. Many FL restaurants cater to tourists….. bland, inexpensive, usually frozen. Of course there are good exceptions which I will keep a secret. 🤐

Johnny Booth The trick to finding decent Mexican food in FL is to find the little isolated patches of agricultural away from the coast. For 15 years, I kept a private google maps page of places we found on our rambles around south and central FL. It's true what they say, if you want good ethnic food, you need to find where the ethnics live. There are only two places in the Orlando area we go to for Mexican and I won't share that information.

My brother-in-law lives in Albuquerque. Just retired from being the curator over at the atomic museum. I’ll have to send this info over his way.

                  Thanks for posting.

Guess who went back for lunch today Took my dad and my best buddy…they loved it! Dad had carne asada and birria and couldn’t stop raving! Buddy had carne asada and shrimp! The shrimp looked like they were perfectly breaded and fried!

And for me….birria and al pastor….it may be the best combo taco plate ever!

Pickled onions! Love em too. Pretty rare to find them on tacos honestly.

STEbbq, onions of some sort, preferably pickled, pair so well on tacos and/or chile. I don’t serve pickled onions with my birria, just cilantro and white onion, but the pickled onions were top notch!
