Most of you know I've been scarce the last couple of weeks because I took a last minute trip to the College World Series in Omaha. I was traveling with a friend and his grandson. Since we made our plans at the last minute, we got creative on the travel arrangements. We flew in and out of Kansas City instead of Omaha so that we could fly on miles and to make sure a rental car would be available.
We arrived in the new Kansas City airport a little after 4 two weeks ago today. My wife had passed through there just a couple of weeks before and said "The new airport smells like brisket." I did see a couple of barbecue restaurants as we headed out, but wanted to get to the car pickup site at the time we had reserved, so we didn't stop inside the terminal, even though one of the options was Oklahoma Joe's, which I've wanted to try. I didn't really notice a barbecue smell, but had lot going on at the time.
After picking up the car, though, we found a barbecue option that was very highly rated (4.8 out of 5 on Google) in reviews and only a mile from the airport. Scott's Kitchen and Catering at Hangar 29 turned out to be a very unassuming spot that was easily accessible from the interstate.

Like I said, we were there early, so I got pictures with few people around:

The locals are very lucky, because this looks like a menu worthy of multiple visits:

I decided to keep it simple and went for the two meat platter with brisket and pulled pork. For sides I got beans and slaw. This was definitely enough food for two:

There was good smoke flavor and great bark on both meats. The spicy sauce was on point with just the right amount of KC sweetness. The beans were a little sweet for my taste, but the slaw was good. The brisket definitely passed the bend test and you can see how moist the non-sauced beef was in this picture:

This was a great start to a great trip.
I did get the chance to sample some Oklahoma Joe's on the trip as well, since they had a booth in the stadium in Omaha. The pulled pork nachos were killer, but I didn't get picture.
