SnS 22" kettle, 22" WSM with Pit Viper, 36" LSG pellet pooper
24" Blackstone griddle, 6 Gallon Cajun Fryer.
50K BTU wok burner.
On my last road trip the GF and I stopped at a random gas station just off the highway in MS for the whole gas, bathroom, food routine. They had a hot counter with ribs and fried chicken, so I thought I'd grab some and see if it was any good. Luckily for me the lady in front of me wanted to know every detail of everything that came with the rib plate including, I kid you not, if she could pick individual ribs off of different racks for her meal. If I had to guess, she is still there a month later trying to get her order. Tired of waiting, I grabbed a sausage on a bun out of the hot rack.
It was one of the better sausages I have ever eaten. The skin had a good snap, it was smoky and the flavor was awesome. I have no idea what kind of sausage it was, but I was really glad the lady in front of me was such a PIA. Otherwise I would have missed out on the sausage. Next time I'm driving through there I will be making a stop there and try some of the other stuff they have.

I always make it a point to eat what I CAN’T get at home. There was one exception, though, when I was in Okinawa, we went to McDonalds. The team just had to try it. Best frigging quarter pounder ever. The fries? Fuhgettaboutit!
And service rivaled some high end sit down restaurants.

Starsky probably. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a cleaner frying oil at that. But dang, the quarter pounder was juicy, the bun was ethereal, everything about it was awesome. And the service…. I felt like royalty! Oh wait, I’m a tall blonde with green eyes in Okinawa.
Funny, everywhere we went off base (I worked for the marines on camp foster) all the young students would stop us to talk and practice their English. It was surreal.

In the early days of McDonald’s they used beef tallow for their fries, but as the health consciousness in America took over it was eliminated along with the best tasting fries.

McD's may no longer be the best-tasting fries, but they are still edible days, and months later;

That was interesting until it listed 7-eleven. The hot food at 7-eleven is terrible. The only fond memory of 7-eleven is when I was a kid and slurpees hit the town. Every kid was lining up for those. The best slurpee? Cherry/cola mix. Yum.
Love the store called Sheetz. Had a good hoot out overt that name.

When traveling I usually ask a local where they would eat. In general they give good guidance.Last edited by LA Pork Butt; February 21, 2025, 06:54 AM.

I vouch for Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis, Slyman's in Cleveland, and Pat's in Philly.
Near Pittsburgh, Primanti's is a favorite. I bet they were on the shortlist for this article.
