Breaking News…Texas Boy Tries In-N-Out Burger For the First Time! 😳

…. A few years ago the first In-N-Out burger chain in the Houston area opened up in Stafford, Tx. about 15 minutes away from my house. Today I went to take advantage of one of my free lifetime car washes I got as part of the deal with my new car purchase last year. [man I love that perk!] Anyway, the burger place was just around the corner from the dealership so I thought I’d check it out for lunch today. After years of hearing all the hoopla about In-N-Out I just had to see for myself!

I ordered the “Double Double” burger with fries and a drink…

My comparisons, for the sake of this earth shattering review, will only be to other fast food burger chains. First off, the French fries. Probably the worst tasting fries I’ve ever had anywhere! They were bland and tasteless with a lousy texture. I mean, they were served to me hot…and they looked good, but not even liberal amounts of salt, pepper and ketchup could save them…not really crisp either. I only ate about 1/3 of my fries, normally I finish all that come with my order. They weren’t terrible tasting by any means, but let’s just say McDonald’s fries ain’t got nothing to worry about.

The burger was…..ok I guess. It was pretty decent, but it left me wondering why most Californians go crazy over their In-N-Out…🤷‍♂️ I did like the way they used a whole onion slice in the burger and used chopped lettuce. Even with it being a double meat burger, the actual meat taste kind of got lost in the mix, but it did taste ok. Can’t compare to Whataburger though if ya ask me. I’d go back again if…..I was hungry and right across the street at lunchtime, but I damn sure won’t get fries next time.

I have to agree with you. Living in So Cal in the mid 80's, I remember In-N-Out as good. When they came to DFW, I tried it animal style and was disappointed and I have not been back.

The moment I saw the title of this thread I instantly wanted to know what you thought of the fries. That is what I have heard.....the fries are terrible.

Your experience mimics mine for the few times I've had In-and-Out while traveling. The burgers are okay, perhaps even quite good, but not life changing. And the fries are the worst.

Maybe its the secret menu stuff that really makes its reputation. (I've never had the courage to order any of that.)

Panhead John - Nope, not too long. In n Out is famous (infamous?) for having awful fries. They trumpet that they make them fresh in store but only single fry them, hence the soggy limpness. Some people claim to order then well done. It helps but only in that they are no longer limp but they are still bad - maybe from a D- to a D+.

In n out is a good fast food burger but that's it, nothing more nothing less. If do you go back, Double Double animal style is the best burger IMO and skip the fries

shify I agree with your rating of D- on the fries. The only reason I wouldn’t give them an F is because they were….edible.

Their fries are not good. Even though they use fresh potatoes, they are skinny, unseasoned and overcooked. At least the ones here in L.E. are overcooked and dry. I don't mind a double-double cheeseburger there, but there isn't any fast food burger that I think is awesome.
I can say Carl's Jr. is worse than most I have had. I won't step foot in the place.

Well, we have Whataburger here. Guess I'll continue to give them my business if and when an In-And-Out shows up.

The few times I have tried them my first thought has been that the grease wasn't hot enough, so they just cook them longer which give them that kinda mushy bland texture.

I agree with you John. That said, I think you need to give animal-style burger and well-done fries a shot for the best possible experience. A huge part of the attraction here really is the price for the food as it is super cheap for what you get but the below tweaks really take it up a notch in taste.

Continued….I appreciate your thoughts but it’s sound like it’s super cheap for a reason, nobody would pay more for it. Personally I’d rather pay a few dollars more for a better burger. My meal was $10. and some change

You are correct! Like I said, it is mostly price and maybe some nostalgia driving the perception of the burger quality. As you note, many burgers taste better.

They haven’t made it to Alabama, at least B’ham metro. As far as restaurant fries, 5 Guys has the best IMO. Culver’s and 5 Guys burgers are my favorite restaurant burgers.

But I (and I’m guessing the majority of us in here) make a better burger than all of them and I’ll die on that mountain.

Yeah, just goes to show everybody does their own thing. 5 Guys didn't impress me at all. Never went back to one after the one experience there. Eh.

That was my reaction the first (and only) time I had In-n-Out out in Cali years ago. Didn't come close to what I was used to getting here in Raleigh at Char-Grill. Now, when my bride first introduced me to WhatABurger it did live up to the hype. We're finally getting them here sometime in the next year it looks like. Also like Five Guys, which came in here a few years ago.

While it isn’t great anyway, I think the quality goes down the further East you go.

Panhead John I am not saying it is good in California, but that it gets worst as it moves East. And, it may be that the competition is stiffer as you move East.

I love their fries, I wonder if they had to change the oil or potato supplier with their expansions. Yes they underseason them, but never had em taste bad. Worse fries in the industry are US burger King IMO.

Can’t believe you love their fries! I’m sure as a chain restaurant, they’re done the same everywhere. Yeah, I’m not a fan of Burger King either, worst onion rings anywhere…

Panhead John I dunno, UK Burger King has some of the best fast food fries. In the US I prefer McDonalds fries or it's a toss up between Chic Fil A and Arbys curly fries for 2nd place. Supply chains do matter, Popeyes chicken tastes much better in Atlanta than anywhere else I've eaten it at, though I've heard theres a couple locations in LA that are to die for.

Burger King fries locally weren’t that bad but the point is moot. The guy that owns all the Burger Kings for miles around went bankrupt. There are several less than two year old places of his setting idle. He hired bad help and lazy managers. Some people could screw up a one man rock fight.

Interesting, never been to an in n out while in the states. Sounds like I don’t need to either 😄

The one thing I notice in your photos is that it seems to be too high of a bun to meat ratio.

Yes, that is how they help keep the prices down. Thin meat patty. I am ok with that due to the price. I'll eat the Double-Double or just a cheeseburger and forget the fries. Chocolate shakes are ok.

Fries do suck, i have to agree with that. One thing i like about in and out bugers is their meat is never frozen. They do not have freezers at In and Out from what i remember reading. You can get super creative on the secret menu, and like somene mentioned they always taste best after midnight and pounding several Coors Lights.
