Torchy’s Tacos…It’s Been Way Too Long

So today I fixed that. I’ve eaten at a Torchy’s before, but it was maybe 10 years ago. For the uninitiated, Torchy’s started out as a single food truck in Austin, Tx. back in 2006. There are now 126 locations in 14 states. Torchy’s does not franchise their restaurants and has no plans to do so. I hadn’t had tacos in a while and there’s a Torchy’s about 3 miles from me, so I hit em up for lunch today.

I gotta say, the tacos were really good, some of the better ones I’ve had. Everything here is fresh and made to order. I could even taste some smoke flavor in my brisket taco. Another thing I liked was that they don’t skimp on the ingredients. Each taco had plenty of meat in it, along with the other ingredients. The prices weren’t bad either, most of the tacos were $5.00 to $6.00. My total for all 3 and a fountain drink was $20.00 and some change. If there’s one near you, give em a shot. I think you’ll like em also.

We have a Torchy’s 1 mile from the housebut haven’t been in years. We don’t eat them out often, but make a lot of street tacos at home.

He left out how much Coors Light he had before the tacos. 🍺🍺🍻🍻

Neat looking tacos. I'd have to do pull a 5 Guys (aka 5 chicos) and just tell them what I want rather than 86'ing 90% of the ingredients.

Or just trust me and go to the old el Chico location in tyler and order a "trailer park extra trashy"

Torchy's within walking distance from our house. Yep! Great Tex Mex!

The guy who runs the kitchen at my local brewery used to work for Torchy's. A couple of weeks ago he had some shrimp so he made two special menu items: Hand battered shrimp Po'Boy sandwich and Shrimp Tacos. He made the Torchy's sauce and the tacos were some of the best I've ever had. He also used it on the Po'Boys. Gotta get that recipe from him.

EDIT: Got the recipe last night. My mistake, its Fuzzy's sauce, not Torchy's. I'll leave the smaller batch conversion to y'all.

        1 gallon mayonnaise
        1 bunch of parsley, chopped
        1 bunch of cilantro, chopped
1/3 of a large jar of minced garlic
        2 tablespoons Greek Seasoning
        Salt to taste if needed

surfdog Got it last night but its Fuzzy's garlic sauce, not Torchy's - my mistake. Very simple but the last ingredient was a little surprising: 1 gallon mayo, 1 bunch parsley chopped, 1 bunch cilantro chopped, 1/3 of a large jar of minced garlic, 2 T Greek seasoning.

I visited Torchy's for the first time when I was in the Houston area this past summer. The Crossroads and Brushfire are simply ELITE! Then randomly found a location just north of Cincinnati when we were there for a tennis tournament. Made my day again.

Yeah, those 2 were very good! But I had to give the edge to the Green Chili Pork, awesome!

Torchy's opened one about 30 min from our house. It's not in an area we often visit, but I will give it a try at some point. I do think we have been to one while visiting our son in Austin, but I'm not 100% sure.

Never seen a Torchy's so empty...! Were you there right when they opened? We always really enjoyed their food. But then another place came along closer to our house, a mom & pop run by folks from (I think) Guatemala called Habanero's that is some of the best food of any kind we've ever had. Absolutely loved that place, it was very much a southern Central America style, not TexMex or Sonoran, quite distinctive. Everything from scratch, if I recall correctly. Might be the restaurant I miss most from our time in TX!

Dave, yeah, I got there right at opening time of 11am when I took the interior pics. There was only 3-4 people there besides me. More people were coming in as I ate and left at 11:30. I also love eating at the Mexican mom and pop places, some of the best!

Panhead John, did your Torchy's not have breakfast hours and breakfast tacos? When my daughter and I stopped in at the one in Spring at about 9:30am that was my first Torchy's experience. I really like Buc-ee's breakfast tacos, but Torchy's has them beat.

Steve R. I just checked and yeah, they’re open 9am-10pm. I went at 11 assuming that’s when they open. After checking out the online menu, I definitely wanna go one day for the breakfast tacos!

Been to our local Torchy's several times and I agree they are "Damn Good Tacos". Two of their tacos are plenty for me.

Thanks for sharing the taco experience! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Torchy’s…but that’s probably because of where I live! I’m game for tacos any time and gives me a spot look for when in the Big Texas!

We went to Torchy’s while in Austin in July and they were pretty awesome. We also had Velvet Taco while there in Austin and they were pretty darn good too!

I saw a velvet taco, I think it is in Tulsa... I was afraid to go in there, or even ask. Thought it might be... some... 'other' kinda joint. If it's just a taco place, well, ok, I might have to try it out.

If you ate all three of those, you prolly felt 9 months pregnant walking out of that place. I remember the one time I went, their tacos are BIG.

I ordered 3 mainly for more variety of tacos to use in the writeup. I would have normally ordered just 2. I actually only felt 8 months pregnant. 😎

All this “Trailer Park Extra Trashy” reminds me of Coach’s BBQ in McGregor, TX. They have Trailer Park Nachos, which are great and a White Trash Burrito that can be amazing. ;-) Their Hobo Bowl is exactly what one needs when hungry AND in need of something like tater tots. LOL

Heading that way in a few days, and found a Torchy’s in Waco. If time allows, I WILL head on over. Thanks Panhead John for the heads up.
