BBQ to visit VA, NC, SC

I’m taking a trip to Roanoke, VA, Greensboro, NC and Columbia, SC. Possibly side trip to Asheville, NC. What are the must go BBQ places to visit?

I have eaten at Mission BBQ in Roanoke twice for lunch. Both times it was very good. That is the only one that I have any experience with. There are a couple in Lynchburg as well but I expect that would be out of your way.

I was in Apex NC (not far from Gboro) City BBQ does a nice job w/ brisket...

I wouldn't go out of my way for good BBQ in Ashville, not that there aren't good places... just that Ashville is kinda like Portland or Austin, so most of the highly recommended joints aren't serving NC bbq, they are doing twists or serving up versions of other popular regional que. I've only heard from friends, but supposedly Buxton Hall has a great mix of multiple styles on offer.

Rodney Scott's place is in Charleston, but that's about a 1.5 hr drive.

I'm trying to figure out when I can get there. Definitely on my bucket list at this point.

Just read (and enjoyed) his book. I would definitely like to check out one of his places.

Yup. His place is on my bucket list, also.

+1 for Rodney Scott's if you make to Charleston. I would recommend the whole hog from the menu. That is his specialty. My wife and I also had a fantastic meal at Bessinger's Bar-B-Q in Charleston. If you hit a couple spots it would be worth the drive.

I have not been there but have heard good things about Mama Jean's BBQ in Roanoke, they are on Facebook with information about their schedule and rotating menu.

If you go about an hour east of Roanoke to Lynchburg I can highly recommend County Smoak. The owner worked for several years for Chris Lilly at Big Bob Gibson's.

My daughter lived in Columbia, and I visited a few points that were okay, but none that would merit a special trip. If you are driving the SC welcome center has a brochure of every joint in the state and the kind of BBQ they do. Of course, standards for a BBQ joint may be because as they say the best BBQ is in someone’s back. Your BBQ skills may set you up for disappointment.

My BBQ skills have massive room for improvement and even for me most of the places aren't as good as what I turn out at home.

ID:	1153047 I passed through Columbia, SC this last spring. Stopped at Midwood Smokehouse. I thought it was excellent. I had a sampler platter of brisket, cheddar jalapeño sausage, and sides.
