Amanda and I took off last Tuesday from Fishers, IN for a three hour plus drive to the delightful Ohio River town of Owensboro, KY. We had an Air B&B there for two nights in the neighborhood behind Owensboro H.S. We were about a mile south of the riverfront where all the bars, museums, and tourist trap stuff is located.
My wife was being cooperative because the whole point of the trip was for me to experience bbq mutton in the bbq mutton capitol of the world. I also wanted to see the Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum.
We arrived in town on Tuesday afternoon and ate lunch at Ol' Hickory BBQ. They are second fiddle to the main BBQ place, Moonlite BBQ. Both places serve mutton.

I chose the sliced bbq mutton platter. The server explained that the chopped mutton comes from the shoulder of the sheep and that the sliced mutton comes from the leg of the sheep. The sliced mutton served had a delightful smoke flavor, and the sauce they offered complimented the meat nicely. If I had any preferences, I would have liked the meat to be a bit more juicy. This was a little like a brisket flat that has been sliced for a little longer than it should have been. But the sauce saved the moment and I am pleased with the meal that I had. The baked beans were noteworthy because they were not sweet and they had a nicely developed flavor. The green beans were spectacular.

My wife had the bbq bologna and she loved it.

The hickory pile at the smokehouse was impressive.

"Uncle Penn played the fiddle, Lord how it'd ring, you could hear it talk you could hear it sing." They had Uncle Penn's fiddle at the Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum! And what a special tribute to a brand of music that makes me happy!

Day two we went to Moonlite BBQ. This is a hell of a franchise, people. I felt like I was parking at Costco on a busy Saturday, and this was a Wednesday at lunchtime. They have a gravel paved over-flow lot!
View from where we parked:

This place was offering a BBQ lunch buffet, with chopped BBQ mutton. That's what I went for. The mutton was delicious and moist. The spicy sauce complimented the mutton perfectly. The sides were meh, but at the same time, this place was serving a HUGE buffet and pulling it off really well.

We loved our trip to Owensboro, KY, and if you get a chance to visit, I highly recommend it.
