The spousal unit and I are headed to our ancestral homeland for a memorial in Feb. Although I new all about ATL in the mid-1970s I am afraid there are precious few survivors and my "BBQ snob" view of smoked meat wasn't as developed as it is today.
Anyone have a hands down favorite in the 404? We are staying in Buckhead (which by the way was the fancy part of town when we lived there!! apparently that has changed).
The google suggests the top 5 on that list are a top 5 on a lot of other lists too.,
We like the Eater "Essential" maps for out-of-town eating planning, as they provide quick (and reasonably accurate) summaries of what to expect at each location. Bonus: they're not in any ranked order -- if they're on the list, they should be good.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Back in the day (I left in the 80's, moved back, and left again in 96), my favorite BBQ was Williamson Brothers in Marietta. A little drive from Buckhead, but not too far depending on traffic. It's still there.
I’ve been there twice in the last couple years. Heirloom Market and DAS were the best of the places we visited, although Fox Bros, Dreamland and Community were all very, very, good. According to "The South’s Best Butts", after Heirloom opened in 2010 the GA Dept of Transportation forced them to only offer "to-go" service because traffic around their location was "hopelessly snarled".
