- Grew up in New Orleans, 20 years in Texas, 22 years in Mandeville, LA. Now Dallas, TX
I’ve only eaten at Big Bob Gibson’s and gave their chicken with white sauce a go last summer. The chicken had good smoke favor but was a little dry. As you would guess smoking the chicken made the skin useless and the final dunking in white sauce helped a little. On the plus side I have made copies of their white sauce which I really like and it does go well on pork. I think the white sauce is a little of a novelty, but good. I am going to marinate some boneless spineless chicken thighs in the white sauce grilling the thighs and giving them a final dunk in the white sauce. I don’t recall the sides of beans and slaw being any thing special.
Years ago I had Dreamland ribs when the made a run at opening a branch in Baton Rouge, LA. I only recall them as being okay. I believe they grill their ribs, and at the time I wasn’t aware of that differentiator. Also it could have been the Pitmaster. The place didn’t make it.
Since our daughter moved from Columbia, SC I don’t get to Alabama very often.

Haven’t had all of them, but can comment on the ones that I have, and recommend a couple more.
Full moon is usually very good.
the original dreamland is good, but it was more of the ambiance that I loved.
Only had Saws once, but it was excellent. I’m planning a return trip in a couple weeks.
I went to school at Alabama when Archibalds didn’t have quite the notoriety that it does now. It was my favorite then. Served his ribs at my graduation party.
Never had bob gibsons, because as a child my mother said she didn’t like it and also vetoed getting food from there. Idk. I would like to try it.
As for some “also rans” and overlooked spots:
Jim n nicks would have certainly deserved to have made this list pre-COVID, but I’ve notice a steady decline in quality the past couple of years.
Moe’s bbq is a great chain, the wings are the best I’ve ever had.
In north Alabama, I’m partial to Wilson’s bbq in Albertville. I’ve known the owners for over 30 years and they are great people. Their bbq is very good, but their sauces are what set them apart though. He won’t give me the recipes either lol.
Im a little surprised to not see miss Myra’s pit bbq in Montgomery on the list. Andrew Zimmern raves about it when he visited
Jim’s hwy 82 bbq (which is staffed entirely by women btw) is another one that I thought might make the cut.
Anyway, looks like I’ve got some spots to go visit.

Between the article and RamaJama, I’ve got some driving to do. Always heard great things about Archibald’s and plan to try it soon. I remember eating at the cinder block Full Moon BBQ in Southside and glad they have one closer. Big Bob’s is good and I grill my chicken with white sauce but it’s the ONLY meat I eat with white sauce. Dreamland in Southside Birmingham is good and I love the rib sauce. Agree with RamaJama on on Moe’s and JnN though the one in Gardendale is good.
A missing Gem is Porky’s Pride in Hayden. Just a couple of miles off I-65 if you’re passing through. I rode out a storm at Lawler’s in Cullman and the ribs were good. I’ve got Bob Sykes on my list too.
