Morning all UK Pitmasters...just got an email from Amazon saying the Meater is going to be on sale from 16.35 GMT (which is stupid because we're in BST right now, so maybe 17.35?).
I've literally just got the Maverick ET-733 and not even unboxed it yet so I'm not sure whether I should buy one but I do like the idea of not having to faff about with wires when smoking.
If anyone has used one then please let me know your thoughts, I know that the range is limited but you can fix that with a burner smartphone nearby, right?
They had several problems in development and long delays that torqued off their investors. LOTS of bad blood there.
That said, I have a MEATER and it works well. Have used it on several cooks with zero issues at all. I bought mine once they actually came to market, so avoided the angst of early backers. Yes, it is short range. But the signal penetrates through the walls of my KK's (thick refractory cement) to a cell phone within 10 feet or so. The cell phone connects to the house wifi so that I can monitor the cook from the app on another device (e.g. my iPad). I understand all the angst, but I've had no complaints with mine.
Several folks on the KK forum have and use the MEATER. I was skeptical, but the reviews were uniformly positive. I have Mavericks, Thermoworks Smoke, a CyberQ, Thermapen. But I find myself using the MEATER more than any of those anymore. It actually works. Can't speak to longevity since I've only had since December, but it does work.
Let us know how the thing shakes out long term. Have you checked it against one of your other thermo devices or boiling water for accuracy? One issue I've heard is the internal battery with limited longevity renders the device useless once it goes out. Would appreciate a long term report, you draw the short straw
Troutman - No, I haven't tested it for accuracy, but doing a brisket tomorrow, so good opportunity to use the BBQ guru with MEATER to measure and compare both meat and ambient temps. Regardless of precision, "doneness" has been spot on -- tri-tips at perfect medium rare, etc. Battery has never quit on me. They claim it can go 24 hours on a full charge. I haven't tested that.
That's good to know, I wasn't aware anyone here had a real positive experience with them. I think I'm going to wait for "Gen 2" or something, though. lol
Interesting in that they are selling them on Amazon's UK site, no presence on the US site....
I ordered (and paid) for mine well over 2 years ago. Still a no show.
My mother taught me if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
So, I wont say anything at all.
I will say, if you are in the market for a very good WiFi thermometer, Fireboard make an excellent product:
The FireBoard is a wifi-enabled digital thermometer designed to operate via your smartphone or through the web. Learn more today.
It can take up to 6 wired probes and integrates well with you phone and/or PC via thier website. Great support (I really haven't had to use them) - their last firmware update added the ability to use different types of probes and even allows a calibration factor.
Not sure what I am going do to if/when my Meater arrives...
That is truly ridiculous. There's a fellow over at the KK forum in the same situation as you. He backed the Kickstarter by ordering the Block, and the Block isn't shipping yet, so he's got nothing. He's ticked, and he has every right to be. They *should* have at least sent the Block Backers the probes with free upgrade to Block later. That they didn't do that doesn't say much about the company.
Count me as another "sucker" who paid for the Meater Block over 2 years ago & still haven’t received anything but update lies, I mean emails. I also highly recommend the Fireboard.
