Update on my Kindling Cracker King (XL). I love it! And I'm glad I waited until they made the King size, because it's perfect and I wouldn't want it to be smaller. I can still slice up some thin sticks on the bigger one, but not always the other way around.

I was able to use it Saturday while running my Yoder cooking a turkey. The only thing I will do different is I will pick up a 4lb sledge, instead of the 3lb I have. The 3lber works, but some harder oak pieces (already split into quarters) took several swats, like 20, and I can't help but think the 4lber would be better for me. I use a lot of apple logs too, and apple when seasoned well is some TOUGH wood.

What do y'all do with yours as far as keeping it outside- do you keep it out in the elements, and if so does it rust?

Here's a pic from their website showing the 2 sizes side-by-side.

I haven't actually bolted mine to anything outside, so it comes back into the garage when I'm done with it. But if I was leaving it outside, I'd probably wipe it down with oil periodically. And yeah, the 4# hammer is the way to go, even with the regular sized Cracker.

I opened a chat with customer service at Northern Tools and asked if I could get the $99 sale price on the XL. I was hoping that they would be in a holiday mood and eager to accommodate a customer. Unfortunately, I didn't have any luck. BAH! HUMBUG!

For the first time ever, my sister and wife did not talk about their Christmas presents to me. I opened my sister's present and it was the small Kindling Cracker. My wife's was the X'tra large. My wife was disappointed at first because of the duplication but I have been using them for two entirely different things. I have been splitting wood with the large model and making kindling with the smaller. I do have them bolted down. It makes a world of difference on the large splits. I have the 4lb sledge. Like Huskee noted with the 3lber, the oak takes quite a few more swings than advertised but it helps to make grunting sounds in-between strokes just to feel good. The small Kindling Cracker makes the ideal sized wood to go with the charcoal in the Vision grill.
