Slim pickings this week as well, but a few things are around. Back to School for me means going around the new School Bus drivers feeling their way around their new routes - it’s Back to School for them as well. And now, Labor Day has shown itself just over the horizon — and I find it a surprise this year. Where did the summer go? I mean, it’s still here, but so little of it is left. Also, I was born on Labor Day, and that’s another reckoning.
Again — I was born on Labor Day. Mom regretted this for a bit, not in a small part because many of her friends teased her relentlessly about missing the point — one is clearly not supposed to labor on Labor Day. But I came along anyway, regardless of the unfortunate timing. Mom really regretted the timing because it had been one of the hottest Augusts on record, and in 1958, no one had air conditioning. It was starting to happen, but my parents didn’t have it, and like early TV sets, it was expensive. The few stores with air conditioning were wise to housewives loitering around just to cool off, so that was not an option. So Mom went swimming in the lake - a lot. It was a natural, spring-fed mountain lake, typical of North Jersey, filled with fish and ducks and algae — and I can hear today’s moms screaming that’s just not safe. But that wasn’t the conventional wisdom then. Doctor’s orders were to do what one could to be comfortable.
So Mom went swimming, because 96 degree weather for the entire last month of one’s pregnancy was just about unbearable. Dad told me quietly that she looked kind of like a blue-striped iceberg, but never where Mom could hear him. It was his task to keep her from floating too far from shore. They were delighted when I did show up. But don’t think Mom was happy she could finally have a drink. She hadn’t stopped. Conventional wisdom again. Doctor’s orders were to do what one could in order to get some sleep. Yep, Mom smoked and drank all through her pregnancy with me.
This is why I’m so creative. (No, really, I turned out fine. I’ve always had excellent health, and I’ve been a member of Mensa for over 40 years.)
