Ah, August. Some folk here have already started their school years, while the rest (with children) are waiting. Naturally, this means the stores are featuring meal prep options, for those mornings when busy parents have to cough up a breakfast and/or lunch and try to shovel it down their highly resistant children. Because my wife and I had children across a range of 16 years from youngest to oldest, that meant doing this routine for over 25 years! I don't miss it. Well, I miss the kids, but not trying to feed and clothe them against their wills.
What I remember from my childhood about late summer was the garden we had, and everything coming out of it in those last few weeks. Dad had a job in advertising sales in the city, and gardening was his escape. The house had come with a fruiting grape arbor, and Dad added a sizable area that he tilled and filled with a variety of vegetables: beans, tomatoes (it was South Jersey - the best environment for tomatoes anywhere) and sweet corn. Lots of corn, at least three plantings. I remember going out to the cornfield with a book to read (it was shady) and realizing that when the breeze was still, I could hear the corn growing. Just a gently silky rustle every now an then, all around me. Corn grows fast. Dad had spaced them out so that we would have corn on the table continuously into September.
Once, a large family gathering convened at our place, and at the appointed time (once tables and chairs were set in the backyard, the burgers and dogs were almost done, the sides (from the garden!) were in place, and a dozen relatives from hours away were about to go sit down), Dad sent me and my brother out to the cornfield. We had been well trained in How to Tell When an Ear of Corn is Ready to Pick, and we did. We came back with two dozen ears, which were quickly shucked (everyone helped), and they were hustled into the kitchen and launched into a waiting pot of boiling water. Once they were out of the water and onto a platter, they came to the tables outside along with everyone and everything else, and we ate.
Decades later, at Dad's funeral, several of my cousins told me how much they had enjoyed those summer cookouts (Mom and Dad managed to pull this trick off half a dozen times) and especially the 'magic trick' of instant corn. It really wasn't 'instant', but it was well timed. And nothing tastes better than corn on the table that was just picked not 15 minutes earlier.
So, August.
