Notable market specials in the greater Charlotte NC exurb - check your local sales flyers as well (YMMV).
We are into the depths of summer now, and we'd better enjoy it. Around here, the Fourth was so hot (106ºF heat index) I couldn't even think of lighting up a grill, so I had to make do with the Ninja Woodfire for my (pseudo) smoking needs. I didn't need much though, my wife was away visiting our daughter in Wisconsin. Boy, that thing is handy. Just turn it on, and then run back inside.
Anyway, a bit fewer specials this week: Most chains had shot their respective wads for Independence Day. Again, I stayed inside, arranged some good snacks and a bunch of cats, and watched the musical 1776 from 1972. That one's always a favorite, but I'd forgotten that the current (extended) version clocks in at 2 3/4 hours long. If any of you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch: yes, many things are oversimplified, but it does show the work and sacrifices that went into founding a new nation. It also pulls off a neat trick, if you're paying attention: we know going in that they're going to sign the Declaration, but it's made very clear from the start that, with this 2nd Continental Congress, it cannot, will not, and will never happen. And there's the play: how it happened. Beautifully done.
