Notable market specials in the greater Charlotte NC exurb - check your local sales flyers as well (YMMV).
Father's Day is upon us now, and isn't it just great to be a Dad? (I know, just put your finger down, close your mouth, smile, and nod.) This week, the retailers have decided that all Dads must grill, so grill we will. All you non-Dads should grill as well. And don't forget the Mean Grills -- er, Girls. (On Wednesdays we cook on the pink kettle.)
But putting that nonsense aside, there are some very good things out there, and surprisingly a lot from ALDI. Watermelons and Cantaloupes are still lurking in the shadows, but it's still too early for them to be local here in the Carolina, so be careful. Cantaloupes especially -- they ship while they're still hard, so they often don't get much chance to ripen before they're in the stores. But soon, in a week or so, melons will flood the markets and life will improve greatly. Peaches, Plums, nectarines and the like are coming in now, most likely from Florida, but that's local enough. Watch out, some of these can also be rock hard.
Right now we're at peak blueberry time, and strawberries are fading. In my own yard, the blueberry bushes have given us two pints in the last week - and there's gallons of them still waiting to ripen. Our figs decided to come in two weeks early -- a surprise! from all the heat and rain we've dealt with the last few weeks. There's hundreds more up there, just waiting for the moment to turn ripe. The tomatoes are on the verge of ripening, and the squashes have already given us a few, with lots more to come. Our little corner of bustling Charlotte is a very fecund garden spot.
