    Deals for lump charcoal fans

The new norm is higher pricing, but these two deals from Home Depot turn back the clock a little bit on two brands that have a high reputation for the discriminating.

Jealous Devel Chunx for a buck a pound: 20 lbs. Lump Charcoal (2-Pack) no charge shipping available.

If you're a Fogo fan you know they've gone sky high the past year or two. Here's a way to get the medium size chunks for $1.15/lb, if you've got the room and the back: FOGO 17.6 lbs. Premium Lump Charcoal-30 Bags-Full Pallet FG-CH-FB-17-BP - The Home Depot again, no charge shipping available.

And, as aways, HD has a Veteran discount of 10% that would lower the cost some more if you're signed up.

I get B&B Oak lump at Academy for $0.65 per pound.

Why should I buy the Jealous Devil ? I'm willing to try it at the $1.00 a pound price.

We each have our value system, if you're curious it's likely best to try some to form your own opinion.

The only difference between gold bag FOGO and black bag FOGO is the chunk size.

That being said, every now and then I’ve received a bag of FOGO with poorly carbonized chunks that burn dirty.

I bought the 2 bags for $40 deal last week. Got free delivery in about 3 days.

I burned the Jealous Devil lump for first time last night. I was grilling skirt steak for fajitas. And I was impressed. The size is about as uniform as can be expected from lump. And it burned hot.

          So far, so good.

HD still has the Jealous Devil lump on sale. I bought two more.

I've always been happy with the price of B&B Oak lump at Academy. Its $14 for a 20# bag. But the sizes of coals vary widely. There will be some very large pieces at the top, some the size of small wood splits. Some good usable medium sizes in the middle. And the bottom of the bag will have too many small pieces that are just not usable.

So how many pounds I get for the money , is up in the air. It makes JD at this price, more attractive.

            Has anyone tried those great big bags of Cowboy lump they sell at Costco? I like using lump in my flat top grill but still stick with briquettes in my smokers. Here's what the old interwebs has to say;

            Pros
            • Price/Availability: Often considered a, good value, frequently found at Lowe's and other major retailers.
            • Fast Lighting: Rapidly reaches cooking temperatures.
            • Authentic Flavor: Made from oak and hickory.
            Cons
            • Inconsistent Size: High ratio of small, unusable pieces and dust.
            • Foreign Objects: Rare reports of finding rocks or uncharred debris in bags.
            • Average Longevity: Does not last as long as some premium brands.
            Conclusion

Cowboy is generally regarded as a decent, readily available option for quick, high-heat cooks. However, it may not be ideal for long, slow-smoking sessions due to smaller piece sizes and faster burn rates compared to premium alternatives.

Love the Cowboy briquettes - their lump has been a disappointment. In fact, the only lump I've really liked was the JD. I pretty well use only briquettes these days.
