    NC Local Market Specials 12/26 - 12/30, 2025

Notable market specials in the greater Charlotte NC exurb - check your local sales flyers as well (YMMV).

Well, here we are and it's Christmas! My wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying not getting ready for the season. Well, there are a few things of course - Christmas Cantata at church (I sing in the choir), and the attendant Christmas Parties here and there about, but we decided that, now that all the kids are grown and through with college, that Christmas could be a quiet affair. No presents (other than what we give ourselves), no major decorations (although I did put up some lights in the front yard, to the dismay of the neighbors), and just a pleasant day spent together.

Our youngest (recent college grad) daughter is spending the day here as well, and so I made a nice dinner to celebrate. I went to Publix earlier this week, and got them to cut me a pork rib roast. In previous years I had gone there but never found any, so this year I asked about it. The Meat Manager said they rarely have those out, but they usually have plenty to cut to order. So they showed me what they had - entire sides of the hog, some 13-14 ribs each, in pairs. I got them to cut me 10 ribs, thinking I could form a Crown Roast, but that's really not enough unless you're willing to do some very deep scoring. Next time? So it became a Half-Crown Roast, and everyone was pleased anyhow.

Once I trimmed, tied and frenched the ribs, I seasoned and sous-vided them flat at 135ºF for about 7 hours (done, but still very pink and bendable), then formed it into as much of a circle as I could, then roasted it in the oven at 400º for about an hour, alongside some jacket potatoes and brussels sprouts and broccoli. It turned out very well. Then it was just a matter of making gravy, setting the table, and pouring the wine. Christmas! My best gift was getting to make a nice meal for my family.

Now as for local market conditions, it's clear that the Grocery Sales Department people are at home snoozing (Good for them!). Both Food Lion and Harris Teeter are offline, as far as sales flyers are concerned. LIDL and Aldi are both present, and are pushing New Year's Eve party foods. Well, it is coming soon. I'll update the listings when the other chains show up.

UPDATE - FL and HT have posted their specials now, and HT has Pork butt at 99 cents a pound!
