    Magma Crossover

I have a high pressure (15-17 psi) Camp Chef Everest that’s been great for camping. However, it won’t work with my pop-up camper’s propane quick connect which is low pressure (< 1 psi) like most campers. I’ve been using 1 lb tanks or using a splitter to pull right from the 20 lbs tanks with the Everest regulator. We’ve sold the pop-up to our neighbors, a couple with a young kid, and getting a camper I don’t have to crank up. 😮‍💨 Yeah, I could engineer a bypass and install a connection on the new camper, but I’m done. I just want to use what I already have and not have to “figure it out”.

After reading reviews, options, and searching posts here, I went with a Magma Crossover Double. There weren’t a lot of reviews, and what I did find was good. BBQGuys.com looks to be clearing out their Magma camping sets. The one with the plancha top was cheapest, cheaper than an open box stove by itself. It didn’t make sense. I reached out to BBQGuys since the Magmas are on clearance (no returns), and yeah, the set is new and not a return or a scratch n dent. They need to clear the warehouse so things are on sale for end of season. With free shipping and 3/1 year warranty I got it and I’ll put in a review once I break it in. For now, I wanted to share the sale if anyone was looking into Magma.

I have not heard of Magma. Solid looking stoves.

I feel the “discounts” are inflated to make the savings look better. Shopping around, though, they are pretty good prices, compared to other online retailers and the Magma page.

Well, the double burner is a BEAST. I didn’t look at the specs as close as I should and it weighs almost 50 lbs. Yeah, you read that right. A “portable” camp/tailgate stove that’s 50 lbs. The cooking area is huge. The dual lid/shelves are nice along with the removable cutting board in each. The stainless steel and aluminum construction seems well done. When I was in my 20s and 30s cooking for a full family with a stronger back it would be killer. Now with the kids out and cooking mainly for two, it’s a monster.

So I messed up and the double firebox is too much for what I need. Since it was on clearance from BBQGuys.com, I cannot return it. Hopefully I can find someone locally, a family or avid tailgater, who would like to purchase it. At least get some money back in my pocket. I went ahead and bought the single firebox and grill top. I feel after the test run, these are gonna be perfect for what I need.

The single fire box is much lighter, coming in around 25-lbs. It’s much easier to handle and set up. The grill top is about 20-lbs and sits securely on top. On my first run, it heated up to about 450°. Magma claims it can go higher and I don’t know if I need it to.

            Pros:
            - has a single 25 pound capacity shelf with removable cutting board
            - can run off high pressure 1-lb propane bottles or can run off a larger tank or a quick connect RV system with accessory hose
            - has adjustable oxygen altitude, lever
            - grill has high sides, and is wind resistant
            - Stainless steel and aluminum construction so it won’t rust (in theory)
            - grease drip tray with aluminum catch pan
            - stays cool underneath when operating to not destroy table or surface it’s on

            Cons:
            - fuel connection is opposite of the handle. You have to make sure you lay it on its base, you can’t just put it on its side.
            - a bit boxy and big
            - elevation adjustment didn’t appear to do much at 5300 ft, hard to tell in daylight

I can't believe those deals. I'm tempted to snag that single burner for $98, regularly $580. Crazy. And a pizza oven top. And a....

I really like that cooker! But like you said, the 50lb weight. I thought of my dad and mom going around the country and lugging something like that in and out of the trailer or truck.

But that single burner, that sounds nice! I did get my dad a single burner that he uses for his travels. It was pretty high with BTU and fairly light, but if that ever goes out I’ll have to mention this one to him.

Hope this one works out for you! Sounds like it will!
