Is it Labor Day so soon? It seems like summer just started! But alas, time lurches forward in its usual spurts and spasms, and retailers have decided that grilling season must end. But we know better, don't we? Grilling season is only just starting! (Grilling season is really just a season of the mind - plus maybe some paprika) If it were up to me, grilling season could start as often as 365 times a year.
But back to Labor Day, with which I have a fairly unique relationship. I was born on Labor Day, and it has often seemed like an inside joke while I was growing up. Certainly, my mother received a good bit of ribbing about her own labor on the day. For me, it typically meant not getting to have my birthday celebrated in school, like many of my classmates. It was the custom then for the birthday child's mom to bring in cupcakes, but mine never did, because school never started until after Labor Day. I felt cheated somehow, but my parents advised me to fret about something real. There were so many other marvelous things in my life, but I was blind to them. Later, I focused my 'somehow cheated out of' energies on the fact that we did not have a color TV. This did not work either, for quite a long time. My parents, each having grown up as the youngest in their families, were not easily manipulated.
Lately, Labor Day has become a tad bittersweet, since it means another birthday, and another year older. This year, I will move from being in my mid sixties to being in my late sixties, and i'm not sure I can deal. At least I already have a color TV.
