I saw the same sale, and picked up a bag of each yesterday!
The black bag FOGO is the exact same product as the gold bag, but smaller pieces. In a kamado it doesn’t matter much between large and medium; small pieces are where kamados tend to choke. And with the gold bag I’ve gotten pieces the size of a volleyball! That’s too big for a LBGE. Most times I’ve used FOGO it’s been great, but I once got a bag that had a lot of partially combusted pieces that burned with a pretty foul smoke. Over the years, though,I’m confident using it.
I’ve never had a problem with JD. It’s a good fuel that burns cleanly.
I was actually going to go to Ace, about 20 minutes further drive, but had stopped at HD first for something else. Let me ask you… did you also get new solar path lights yesterday, like I did? 😀

JD is good stuff. Black bag FOGO is the worst bag of charcoal I’ve ever purchased. Really off-putting aroma and it sparked up a storm while heating up.
FOGO black bag is my favorite for lump charcoal. It’s been the most consistent brand I’ve used in regards to size, and always burns clean with low spark.
I know many have had the opposite experience. Can it be regional? Use specific (I use it for grilling and to set the coal bed for my stickburner)? Or have the BBQ gods just been smiling on me more?!?
