Lodge 12-inch Cast Iron Skillet at Lowes - Discounted

I stopped by Lowes this morning to see if they had any grilling stuff discounted for end of season. There wasn't much, but I scored this for $17.97, originally $29.97. The price was listed as $23.97, but the register discount was greater.

I was in serious need of a cast iron skillet this size (my old one vanished a couple decades ago) and Lodge is one of my favorite cookware brands. I'll pass this one on to my descendants after I get a few decades use from it. I'm kind of over the moon right now.

Note, the online price is the normal price, so you will probably have to stop in your store to see how much they are selling it for. I hope this helps someone!

      I love my Lodge 12" !

I think we bought it at a Cracker Barrel in the mid 1990's on a whim, and it then sat in the cabinets for about a decade, unused. I started using it in the early 2000's as my "blackened steak" pan, and was always smoking up the house and setting off the smoke alarms when I used it on the gas cooktop in the kitchen. Then in the mid 2010's, I started using it for almost all of my stove top cooking, as well as on the grill. It's now my most used pan. It just took 30 years of having it to get to that point, haha.

For some reason, my wife will never ever reach for the cast iron, and only likes to use the non-stick Oxo skillets. Which is just as well. Then I don't have to worry about her damaging the seasoning! She will use it if I set it out to start browning ground beef for spaghetti or such, but not on her own.

My grandmother's cast iron is still in use by my parents, but I plan to inherit it at some point. Not sure what those skillets are - I think she had a couple of 10" cast iron skillets she used on her little electric coil stove back in the day. My grandmother always browned her pot roast or other meat in the skillet, then it went into her pressure cooker. Best pot roast ever, never duplicated by anyone else in the family. I also ate many fried Spam sandwiches made in one of her skillets, or fat-back or steak-o-lean.

Same, I really enjoy my 12". It doesn't get used as often as my 10"'s, but when it does it sure comes in handy!

jfmorris, thanks for sharing. I follow a similar method to your grandmother for my roasts: sear, reserve, saute onions then garlic, deglaze the pot, add meat, then pressure, though I do it all in the same pot, unless oven roasting. Then it's all in the cast iron Dutch oven.

There are a couple of things I make that require a cast iron skillet, for which I have found non-stick skillets to be sub-par. Yorkshire pudding and this French skillet/oven chicken I make will come out much better.
