    Good deal on small refrigerator

When our daughter graduated from college, we took her dorm refrigerator and put it on our deck. It’s served us very well for 13 years, even though it’s really cheap. This year I was looking at replacing it, and found this at Home Depot. The bottom half is 4.5 ft.³, about 1.5x that of a typical dorm fridge, and it has a separate freezer on top as well. This is a deal at $218.

A caveat on using these outdoors: if you live in intemperate climes, you can’t leave them plugged in when the temps go consistently below freezing. But what are you doing out there then, anyhow? I plug mine in around now, mid May, and unplug it usually around late October. Then it gets cleaned in spring next year.

This category of appliance is populated with lots of off brands, but the guts, the compressor and electronics, are really all the same. Like I said, we bought the last one in 2009, it’s been outside for about 9 years, and it still works fine.

Another caveat, if you go for this deal inspect the unit before leaving the store. Dings in the stainless front are common, I was told by the person helping me.

If you want or need something larger, and have room for it, the Vissani is only $299.

Ok, I'll ask.. why leave a fridge outdoors? I get that it's for overage, things that you can't store in the kitchen fridge (or don't want taking space there) but... what's the actual use (i.e. what things are those)?

I don't mean freezers, i get those. But fridges?

Coolers are fore hunting or fishing or the beach where no electricity.

Its on the deck, where everyone sits and eats. I keep beer, soda, and condiments in it, and often we’ll make stuff like cole slaw or potato or macaroni salad ahead of time, and keep it there for serving when guests arrive, rather than porting back and forth to the kitchen.

Makes sense. I don't have enough people over often enough to warrant that so I just toss ice in a cooler when I do have folks over (also, my patio is right outside the kitchen, so it's a really short walk to get something if I want).

Briskets? Probably two in the freezer, and half a dozen or more if I took the shelves out and stacked them. But the real answer is, three umai bags with whole primals or strips.

We have a couple of the little dorm fridges in the garage as they fit under the counter perfectly. One is for non-alcoholic drinks and other is for alcoholic drinks. Then we have a full fridge in shop mostly used for keeping eggs from the chickens and extra stuff as needed. And a TRUE kegerator that we have 5 taps on.
