Elk USA Spring Sale until May 31st

I got an e-mail from Elk USA yesterday and they have a sale going on:

I placed an order for a 5 lb chuck roast (the only sale item I bought), 2 lbs of ribeyes (slightly cheaper than Wild Fork - without shipping included), a 5 lb rack of elk short ribs, and 2 lbs of elk flat iron steaks. I have never ordered from Elk USA but decided to give them a try. Compared to other sites that I've seen their prices seem fair.

What I don't like is that shipping is not determined when you place the order - it is calculated at packaging so I'm in the dark here, I'll post when I find out.

The discount code will not post in the coupon code box on the order form - you have to put it in the comments box when you order and they will apply it before charging your card. OR, you can phone in your order but I'm not sure if they can quote shipping until the order is packaged.

Their website is straight out of 1998 so its outdated looking. There are minimums you have to order for each cut. I.E. - you have to order 2 lbs of buffalo ribeyes, you can't just order 1 - 8oz. ribeye. Here is the ad:

UPDATE: They called me within 15 minutes of placing the order to get approval on the shipping and handling. UPS shipping to a commercial location (my office) is about $70.00 and Elk USA's handling fee (package, dry ice, etc. is $21.00 so total S&H is $91.00.

I told them I'll call them tomorrow with my decision, that seems high to me but I've only dealt with Click Akaushi -which usually runs about $17.00 for shipping, WILD Fork Foods and Creekstone Farms gave free shipping on the orders I've placed. I've never ordered from another online supplier - what do y'all think about this price?

UPDATE: I'm going for it. My order is about 14 lbs of meat and comes to $183 before S&H and before the discount is applied to the chuck roast. After adding the S&H the price ends up being about $19.60/lb which I don't think is unreasonable for game meats I can't find near me.

That is what I thought Creekstone et al might be doing. I'm probably just spoiled by the sale prices and lower to free shipping that I have been receiving. The stuff I've bought from Click, Wild Fork, and Creekstone is cheaper than I get locally. Again, the items were on sale and the local stores have to factor in delivery and fuel charges too.

Seems pricey but again, they're providing a service so we pay for those services we want. I often think about how hard it would be for me to get a certain meat otherwise, for instance with Wild Fork- how much would I spend on a salmon fishing trip, or elk hunting trip, to possibly not even get any salmon or an elk...so to me some of those things are well worth the price premium.

Huskee That is why I decided to order, meats I can't get here and way cheaper than a hunting trip.
