So I have a 20†Horizon Classic offset smoker. Recently my old temp probe unit was broke in an unfortunate fall. Which was sort of a blessing because I have been wanting to upgrade to a fireboard unit. To me that’s a no brainer. My question is if I should invest in getting a fan temp control unit. Fireboard has one and there are a few others that I know about. Do people use them on offset smokers and if so which one do you suggest? Thanks for everyone’s time.

Others may disagree but fan control is best suited for long cooks using a butt load of charcoal that lasts as long as the cook itself. The fan controls the burn and thus the cooking temp.
On a stick burner you have no choice but to manage your fire. Smaller hotter fires that produce blue smoke require fuel every 45 minutes to an hour. The fan blowing air into your fuel chamber isn’t going to be that beneficial since you have to actively control it anyway.
I’d save the money. If you have or get some different charcoal style cookers, then yes it’s very beneficial.

There might well be some benefit from utilizin a fan / temp controller on a stickburner, but I have not tried it.
I also have a Horizon 20" Classic, as I reckon ya probly know.
I have seen a few here, have a fan setup, includin Danjohnston949 's Oklahoma Joe Highland...
