Not much difference!
There are three versions of the FireBoard 2: the basic unit without the integrated thermostatic controller, the Drive version that has the controller built in, and a three-channel version that accepts thermocouple probes in lieu of the standard thermistor items (available in August, 2020). If you have the Drive accessory from the original FireBoard, that will plug into even the basic unit, providing full thermostatic control functionality at a lower price.

Pretty much if you want a fan at some point, you only have to charge one unit with the drive. I wanted K probes, so I went with the Pro which only has the drive function. Someday I might buy something I can use a fan on

I have a pit viper fan and a DigiQ DX 2. If I upgrade to a Fireboard 2 I would definitely be using it to run a fan frequently. I might also add another fan to keep the DigiQ in service and for the convenience of not having to move the system around. I have heard the pit viper might be better than the Fireboard fan?

Higher temp support, plus the MAK uses them and they’re universal so any type K probe will work. The type k support around 1000°.
I use a Pit Viper fan with my FB 2 Drive. With regular FB you need a dongle to run fans that costs more than the difference.Last edited by glitchy; July 19, 2022, 07:41 PM. -
the tradeoff is less probe ports for the Pro version, but the k probes are more durable AND you can buy any kprobes, so you have more price/quality options long term.
