Anova to begin charging $2/mo to use their app beginning August 21, still free now so act fast
The CEO of Anova said they will begin charging $2/mo to use their app beginning August 21, still free now so act fast and get grandfathered in if you see yourself wanting to use it or have it but haven't signed in yet.
Control your Anova Precision Cooker or Precision Oven with the tap of a screen in the Anova app family. Enjoy precise control and access to the world's largest collection of sous vide and combi-oven recipes!
Also, in a post from a month ago, SheilaAnn shared that Anova will retire the connectivity of their older SV units, you can see that post here.
Other companies have tried to do similar stuff to this... the only ones I can think of that are semi-successful are Microsoft (with Office costing an annual feel) and Adobe. Both have spawned a massive amount of competition growth because of it (OpenOffice etc).
BMW's experiment with this was a massive failure
I don't see this ending well for a smaller niche company

Whomever the CEO of Anova is certainly proves the point HL Mencken was making when he wrote “It is the classic fallacy of our time that a moron run through a university and decorated with a Ph.D. will thereby cease to be a moron.”
In this case we probably just need to substitute MBA for Ph.D

I suspect it is to offset the cost of app updates and maintenance and such and the labor needed to do so, we all know everything is going up including companies' costs. But, as Jerod mentions above you don't need the app to use the device. I can still turn mine on and use it irrespective of any of this so for folks like me this is a moot point. And if you install and sign up now, same. I wonder how they will fare in the future with new customers.

Yes, at least the device I have will work regardless of app. But I’m not paying per month to use the app for this thing. If it was a one time payment, then that would make me think differently, but they can go where the sun don’t shine if they think I’m gonna pay monthly for their app! Ridiculous to think that people would pay a monthly fee for the app they provide for the Anova. Damn them!
makes me want to buy a Joule just to say take that!
Huskee the Anova I have is being discontinued from app service. So I would have to buy a new device to have access to the app anyways, which, I’m guessing means additional costs. But again, a one time charge, I’d be fine with, but monthly……they can stick that where the sun may not shine!
If you wanted a newer device to connect to the app, then you may have to buy a new device, yes, but the app, assuming you currently have it and are therefore grandfathered in, wouldn't be a charge to you. And if your current device has Bluetooth, then you should still have that connectivity at least (I suspect anyway, I could be wrong).
Huskee, I just came across this the other day when turning on my app, I generally do not use the app, but my first thought was, i'm glad my Anova can be run without an app.

I've had my bluetooth/WiFi model since April 2016. In all that time, I've really only "used" the app a few times ... mostly during the first few months of ownership (in a vain attempt to prove to myself that the app would be a game changer (it isn't)).
I'll keep using the circulator for as long as it lasts ... and won't worry about the app. Once it dies, I'll have to decide between a new Anova and one of its competitors (and probably won't worry about their apps either).
I haven't turned mine on in a long time, but the Bluetooth version should still allow phone connectivity regardless of the app-wifi disconnect w/ older models coming up, correct?
Huskee ... it depends on how the app is written. If it has to check in with the online "mother ship" before it is allowed to work for you, then you're out of luck if you aren't a subscriber. Otherwise you may be ok.
In my case, I've got one of those older units that will no longer be supported, so I'm out of luck (as if I cared). Although ... if I refrain from ever upgrading the current version on my iPhone, it may still work ... 'guess I'll find out.
