Since I'm right-handed I will lift the lid with my left hand to fiddle with the coals with my right hand so I typically like the coals/SnS to be on the right in such a case. I have the Dragon Wing add-on table on my 22" on the left for this reason. The meat's on the left since I rarely do much with it during cooks except when it's time to wrap if it's a butt/chuck/brisket, but that's an ordeal so at that point it doesn't matter, the lid gets set somewhere.

I don’t know if my logic is right or not, but on my WSCG it’s on the right side, straight above the fan port. With the Pit Viper port adapter pointing down I feel it forces the air in a circle so that I think is blowing top down through the SnS as it comes back over to that side pushed down from the lid. Thought process was to keep from blowing ash up onto the food.

I have never had an issues with blowing ash. I have a Pit Viper on both my 22 and 26. Both have the SnS on the left and the fans opposite. I keep the fan ports wide open on both. I just don't think the fans are powerful enough to blow ash around. Especially if they are opposite the coals and using a DnG or foil.

LOL, ya know what, I wasn’t thinking about the drip n griddle when I thought through that originally and first set it up, So, it’s probably hitting the pan and rolling over to the SnS from underneath anyway. I’ll have to try the other side next cook. Not that it hasn’t worked just fine as is.
