Got my new Fireboard w/ fan and have been running some test. Have the fan connected to the burner tube in my Weber Performer and a SNS with griddle pan on half of the charcoal grate. For the first few test I used Kingsford regular. Worked okay but had to keep the grates cleaned out every few hours. Tried some B&B Oak lump and it was flawless. Filled up my SNS and dumped a few hot coals on one end. Dialed it in at 250 and the Fireboard with fan kept it basically flat-lined for 10 hours. Ended the test because it started to rain but there wasn't much coal left anyway. May need more testing but for now, just call me lumpy.

That's great news! I will be modifying at least one of my kettles to accept a Pit Viper fan. If it goes well, I'll purchase the Fireboard cable (and a 12vdc battery). That's pretty good that you got 10-hours! This is the kind of performance I was hoping for. I'm wanting to do more Pastrami and I really like how it comes out on the kettle, but I'd like to do some every now and then "overnight" in a manner of speaking (because I am on a rotating shift schedule, it could be day or night). Thanks for posting your results!

What is the advantage, if any of lump over briquettes? I use propane mainly (out of convenience), but when I use charcoal, I always reach for KBB. I have used lump a few times and never really noticed any difference other than it is hard to make sure you have the same amount in the chimney cook to cook due to irregular shape. That and it always seems to have more dust in the bottom of the bag. I will say, it SEEMS like it produces less smoke when it is igniting though.

Kingsford original briquettes have chemical additives and lump is natural. To me, briquettes have a have a bit of an off putting smell which gets transferred to the food. There could be some additive free briquettes. Also (with very limited testing) I have more issues with briquettes stopping up the square grates in the bottom of my SnS than with lump.Last edited by aucivil; November 5, 2017, 06:37 PM.

Some briquettes will produce less ash also. I see a difference in Stubbs natural vs KBb. Less ash means a longer unmanaged run time on systems you have to disassemble to clean ( in my pk 360 I get almost 2x the runtime). In a Weber you can still use the ash sweepers mid cook (cover or move the food since the ash will fly around) so it’s less an issue.
Though I’ve detected zero difference in flavor or performance otherwise.
