Slow N' Sear - Plus, yay or nay?

    Hi everyone.

I've been smoking pretty successfully using a Smokenator (bought it before the SnS came out, I believe). It seems pretty clear that people favor the SnS over the Smokenator. My question is, should I go for the SnS Plus or just the regular SnS? The SnS will most likely live in the kettle full-time, if that makes any difference.

Supplemental question - I can comfortably fit two racks of pork ribs on the top grate of my kettle with the Smokenator. It looks to me like the SnS will leave me with a little less space in comparison. Are people able to get two racks on a 22.5" kettle with the SnS, or should I be looking for a rib rack?

    Thanks,
    Alistair

I can fit 2 slabs laying flat. If I use a rib rack I can get 3

You can fit 4-5 racks of ribs on your kettle if you roll them up and use skewers to hold them together.

I'll need to look into that. Thanks for the tip!

I haven't done ribs on the kettle, but Huskee had a picture recently of a rolled rack on his kamado-style cooker.

To the first question, I got the SnS Plus because I have some lump charcoal...turns out the KBB works so well in the SnS that I haven't used the lump coals! The SnS Plus does make it easier to dump the partially burnt coals from a low-n-slow cook into a separate can for later use on a Warp 10 cook. So, if you are going to use briquets, you don't need the "Plus" but it is handy!

No, of course you are right. I'm coming off of 5-night shifts and trying to switch to a dayshift schedule. Brain-fart, if you will. Sorry for my confusion!

I'm gonna dissent from the anticipated posts here, and suggest you resist the SnS, and instead use that money to buy a true smoker - a WSM. Or even a "gimmick" smoker, such as the PBC. Or better yet, a Kamodo Joe or a Jambo.

IMHO, the SnS is a good (but not great) way to smoke meat.

But go with your heart and get what you want.

I've done a few side by sides with both the kettle/SnS and EOS stickburner, and my personal opinion is the SnS does a great job if you follow ABC's directions for lighting & temp maintenance (very easy) and don't overdo the wood. In fact the side by side taste tests were nearly indistinguishable, and that is not a joke or an embellishment. To get back on track with your original question- personally I prefer the original. I say save a buck and go SnS original.

When the SnS plus was introduced an option was there to buy the underlying grate of the Plus as an add-on. It disappeared pretty fast i.e. Before I got around to ordering one. Will those ever reappear?

          best regards,

          Jim

I just ordered the original SnS, guess I can't help but think the bottom plate/grate limits the amount of airflow. Also to save a few bucks for other toys! Besides the original has always had rave reviews!

I have a SnS plus and like it. I smoked some ribs for 5 1/2 hrs with it without having to add any fuel. A little tap with something on the side of it will help let Ash fall out.

I like the SnS simply it will last 5 hours without having to lift the lid and losing the heat while doing a butt.

I recently purchased the Slow N' Sear Plus. My first low and slow cook with it will be this weekend. Planning to do Pork Butt. So that part of the review will have to wait. But it is a Steak Searing MACHINE! And bone-in chicken thighs cooked indirect with high heat then finished over the direct concentrated heat are fantastic! Takes about 15 seconds to crisp up the skin.
