    Slow N Sear Question

i just received the Slow N Sear that I ordered a few days ago and I have a question for those of you that have experience with it. Can you give me an estimate of how long a full load of charcoal will last at 225 degrees so I can estimate how much I need to fill it for the length of time that I need to get out of it? Thanks!

With KBB 8 hours minimum. With lump I got 8 hours out of a full load running 260F. As for any left over, just shut the vents and snuff out the fire then you can use the leftover on the next cook. I've never put less in for a shorter cook since I can just use the leftover next time.

Don't be shy about overfilling too. Many times I'll fill mine extra full so that the grate sits lopsided at first. In mild weather I can get 10-12hrs doing so.

Don't forget to stir the coals every 4-5hrs, to clear the ash from them.

Great point. This bit me on my last cook using B&B Briquets which produce a thicker ash. Couldn't figure out why my Maverick was telling me temps were dropping at the 4 hour mark. Looked & it was full of ash. Also put my lit on top vs starting the side which may have contributed to the build up.

Nice tip on stirring the coals! I'll remember that. I got 8-hours easy using KBB at 225F.

Thanks, all. I'll fill it up even if I'm only going to need it for 6 hours.

For 6hrs you'll be just fine with a regular or even a light fill.

I can get 10 hours on mine, it's usually mid 80s here during the day and low 70s at night.

Do you like to put the unlit coals on top of the lit coals or the lit coals on top of the unlit coals? Does it matter?

I've had a similar thought upon refilling... do you push what's currently burning over to the side an then pour unlit on the other side like you started out, or do you just pile on top one way or the other like Shooter's scenario? Haven't had to refill yet, as my only cooks have been 5 hours or less.

When refilling for a long low and slow cook I've always knocked off the ash, done an ash sweep to make sure my intake vents are clear, and moved all the remaining coals to one corner, then refilled the charcoal. I typically do a refill when I know my charcoal is about gone and I end up with about a fist size stack which is close to the 12 lit I started with. This method has never failed me.

MillerTime, I usually Shake the Ashes Down Every 2-2 1/2 Hrs and Don't Open the Kettle until I detect a Temp Drop! I'll Have a Weber Mini Chimney ready with the Coals I am going to add Ready, I open the Lid and Lift the Grill Wing and use My Tongs to Rake the Hot Coals to One End and Pour the Unlit Coals over the Hot and Spreading to the Cold Side of the S 'n S! This Keeps My Lid Off Time to a Minimum! The Way I Cook I Don't Feel the Need
