    Home made rib rack?

Has anyone made their own rib rack? I'm thinking of buying a long .125" ss rod and bending it to my specifications. If I put a nail or screw in a wide board, heat the rod with a butane torch, and bend , it shouldn't be too hard. At least the 90* bends should be easy - I'm not so sure about the 180* bends.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or cautions on doing this?

You will have much better results using a bench vise to hold the rod. I'm not sure what you mean by "If I put a nail or screw in a wide board, heat the rod with a butane torch, and bend , it shouldn't be too hard."

Even red hot (assuming you can even get it that hot) , its not gonna be easy to bend with out a vise or something similar, not to mention multiple bends. I understand the itch to DIY this one. To be honest, I would try to find a rack that fits what your looking for. Although, I am sure you have already done that.

Thanx Spinaker . I am planning on taking a wide board or maybe a piece of plywood, marking a right angle on it, putting a nail or screw in the corner, and using the right angle marks as a guide for the bends as I bend around the nail. If I can find a short piece of ss rod, I may buy it and see how hard it is to bend. I agree that a metal bench vice would be better, but I don't have access to one. I'm thinking that a 1/8" ss rod shouldn't be too hard to heat or bend, but since I've never done it, I could easily be wrong.

Here's the jig I made to bend some 1/8" type 304 stainless rod to make some extra PBC hangers. It's a 1/2" pipe nipple and flange, a 16d common nail and a piece of coat hanger wire. The rod was not heated and even the 180º hook bent easily. I also tried 3/16" rod, and it didn't work as well (bent the nail as much as the rod).

... Mapp gas burns hotter than propane if you use heat ..... a Youtube search will deliver some innovative methods for bending ..... Johnec00 suggestion is excellent

Thanx Guest - I thought about Mapp, but according to what I read, it's only about 150* hotter than butane. I already have butane, and Mapp is expensive...

Thanx everyone. I bought a piece of cold rolled steel bar today and did a "Proof of concept" test today. It did work and I will be posting the results when I take some photos.
